Literally in a 12X15X8' room the fronts of my speakers are 53" off the wall behind them, 40.5" from the walls beside them and 63" apart.  My ears are typically 73" away at the end of an equilateral triangle tho I will move my chair to or fro to get the best out of an individual recording and 48" off the wall behind them which is diffused by open back record cabinets.  I get great openness and dimensionality.

I know that is not what is meant by the topic heading but believe speaker placement is critical to getting the best out of one's system particularly if you listen to a lot of recordings made on location and in real time.

You can click on the "Systems" link under my avatar for a pic and component info.
