Save your money and spend it elsewhere. You will only "will yourself" to hear a difference. I've tried plenty on my 4B-SST and its replacement, 14B-SST and I use an inexpensive aftermarket cord so that I sleep better at night  but as always YMMV...

Let's not argue about it here, guys.  We all know that some hear the difference, some not, and some are convinced that there could not be possibly any difference. It's not the point.  Let's have some data of positive experience.

Stock cables on a SP1.7 and 9B-ST.

I saved all my money to upgrade to new speakers which everyone perceives as a significant improvement.

Next step is probably an upgrade from the SP1.7 to a model with 10db more dynamic range, an order of magnitude lower THD+N, effective dejittering, and multi-channel 1394 input for SACD/DVD-A. I expect this upgrade to also have a bigger impact than switching cables.

Then I might split out into a separate stereo amp since I mostly listen in 2-channel mode.

When I am through with this all I might look at cables again if someone manages to come up with a cable that I can pick out reliably in a double blind test as being better. It is easy to design a cable that stands out on the negative side.

Cheers

So Thomas, what piece of equipment would you have in mind (to upgrade the Bryston SP 1.7 to)?

I completely agree with Ron. I am still using the power cord bryston supplied. I remember reading somewhere a $$$ cord is not necessary because in the amps' construction (my B60) considerations have already been made for something like this. I have a more $$$ cord on my Arcam CD72T (EvidenceAudio.com). I swapped both cords one day and found that the CD Player benefits more from an expensive cord than the amp. The $$$ cord just made it more fuller sounding, something it didn't need actually.

I think we're mising the point of the original poster's question.  All he is asking is what power cords are we using.  Spare the editorials.  Just because I use $$$ cords doesn't mean they're better than Bryston's provided cords.  It is my choice.  I learned long ago to not invest the time to convince others whether they're better than OEM's or not.  This discussion goes in the same direction as $$$ interconnects vs. OEM's vs. Monster vs. blah, blah, blah.  There are two very distinctive camps and we don't need to turn this thread into a Hatfields vs. McCoys as they always seem to go.

This question must be going around...

I'm using a Synergistic Research A/C Master Coupler to good effect.
NOT that I'm down on the original p/c.  I was chasing the darkest background I could ellicit from the whole rig.  Dunno if it REALLY helped...
Personally, at least as far as any of my Bryston stuff has seen, I think changing cords for me has been a matter of taste, not unlike rolling tubes on the tube gear.  Another way to tweek to one's tastes.
Sure beats heck out of selling a new piece because it might be perceived as bright in a situation, and taking the beating on that.
I've tried a couple other aftermarket p/cs, but like the SR one most.
I must point out that I still like the amp just fine, if I had to leave it stock.
Inertia mostly keeps the gear from changing, but if I had something new to introduce, I might jockey all of the a/c cables around, even on the Bryston.
It's something to do, when you own it and might be able to learn something. :!:

DeadFish

Hey deadfish saw your reply on AA. :)

Someone other than the poster might find it interesting, Jimmy.

Perhaps so but I could see where this was heading and like I said, it's the same thing when people start talking about interconnects.  Those that want to spend the dollars and 'hear' the differences have to constantly defend themselves (in many cases) to those that pontificate there is nothing to gain by spending all that $$$.  Hey, as long as the folks spending are not asking for money from those that aren't, what's the arguement about?

I am pretty confident this thread has popped up here and in virtually every other forum that deals with audio equipment and the results are always the same.  It starts out tame, one or two folks start bashing the folks spending the money, the folks spending the money argue back, then it gets nasty before a moderator or administrator has to step in.

I was suggesting we honor the original poster's request and keep it civil.  If someone wants to start another thread bashing expensive after-market power cords, be my guest.

I believe the quote may have come from James Tanner in a newsletter if my memory serves me correct.

I wouldn't recommend anyone replace the stock cord anyway. Say you need at least 6ft for a power cord...I know they start at $300cdn or close to it...not worth the money!

As for an upgrade from the SP1.7 I am in wait and see mode for now

I will at least wait to see what the new Halco processor will offer in jan 2005. I also wonder whether it will take a new mortgage to get one.

My biggest pain point is the lack of 1394 digital input approved for SACD and DVD-A.

Lower noise floor is next on my list.

Wow, lower noise floor.  I thought the 1.7 was dead quiet to begin with.

As far as the digital input, I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't on Bryston's upgrade list for 1.7 owners.  When, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised just the same.

Power Cords for Bryston Amp

Hi Fellow Brystonphiles.

I recently went from a Wireworld Stratus III to a PS Audio Plus XStream power cord on my 3BSST.  I know the manufacturer says it doesn't make any difference but the PS Audio really allows my electronics to "breathe".

It is neutral too. I found that the Wireworld Stratus increased high frequency detail and did nothing for the rest of the spectrum.  On some recordings the system could send a little sterile and thin.

The PS Audio is nothing like that.  Highly recommended.
