Geek Wave DAP - $148
« on: 31 May 2014, 03:20 am »
I'd guess this qualifies as Cheap and Cheerful? The Geek Wave DAP campaign has just put up a 32GB version for USD148. (Not such a good deal for international folks as $40 extra for shipping, but I think it's free in the US). They say it's less than it costs them to make.

Capable of DSD (normal and double rate) and up to 384 kHz PCM.... Internal storage is 32GB but there's an SDXC card slot.

[Edit: maybe I should have put this in Headphone Mania...]

I picked one up.  I have been enjoying the Geek Out Dac for the last few weeks and it sounds very good, I especially like what it does for 16/44.1,  I have never heard Dire Straits Brothers in arms sound better.  At $150. this was worth a shot.  If you are in a hurry however, you may want to look elsewhere, the LH process seems to drag on quite a bit.

Best,
Ed

Good point, very true. Long lead time on this one... in fact it seems the $148 version doesn't have an estimated delivery time, others are Jan or March 2015.

I'll be waiting for the 64GB version (ordered earlier).

Unless I buy it and then ship it to you.  Should be much less if I ship it USPS.

Thanks for the offer Jason :) But I already went for the 64 which does include shipping.

Having said that, USPS prices seem to have skyrocketed, from what I can tell a small flatrate box is $24? I seem to recall it used to be $13-14 a few years ago

OK.

The offer is a standing one just in case anything else pops up.   :thumb:

Why isn't there digital out for the lower GB version? I'd rather swap XD cards than have a bulky player that costs $800 extra over a couple XD cards.

Let's wait until next Monday and see what kind of additional perks they offer. Maybe the Digital out is one of them ;-)

Cost would seem to be the factor... LH are very picky about what they produce and won't just whack on an SPDIF output if it's not stellar itself or compromises the analog performance in any way. That, at least, was the reason why the digital output was dropped from the Pulse...

Yeah

Well, the wait begins!

Yes, the limited availability seems to have been a bit of a ploy. Still, it's still a good deal. (I think/hope).

They design top-shelf gear, but the head guy is a Marketer from head to toe for sure.

Damn... I actually need a portable player as my Sandisc just died on me...

Will these ship immediately?

EDIT:  Damn!  I jumped in assuming no delivery estimate meant it wasn't backlogged...  now I see this will probably be a full year away?  yuck!

That's why I haven't jumped...just think of the developments in 1 year.
