JVC TT-81 For Sale
« on: 25 Apr 2014, 10:24 pm »
I happened to come across this beauty.  It isn't every day you see one.  The TT81 was sold in Japan and Germany only and sold as a separate motor unit with options for a base.  This one has a VPI base and a UA-7045 arm which has a good reputation.  I think this set-up has tremendous potential and should outperform tables costing thousands.

This is a little more info on the table:

somebody should buy it, provided there is no problem with it.  even better is the JVC TT-101, a great turntable for the money according to the comments I have read on audiogon.

Nice. Gotta say I really like my JVC-QL7 table. Looks similar to the TT-81 but is all manual. I paid $180 for my QL7 on Craigslist and I will say that I have never seen another JVC for sale on Craigslist since. Glad I jumped on it  :thumb:

I did replace the warn out feet, but that was easy and cheap with new springs from McMaster-Carr and rubber feet from Parts Express.

She's a keeper

Even when they came out, I always thought there was a very close resemblance to the Denon DP-1000 series.

I wonder if that was coincidental or purposefully or was there some type of connection.

True, but in the unlikely event that a 101 shows up it will probably go for at least 4X the price.  One thing to be aware of, is some of the chips in the speed servo are no longer being made.  If the electrolytic caps in the power supply are replaced, they're not likely to fail.  Still, the new VPI Classic Direct is $30K w/3D arm.  A comparison to a tricked out 101 would be interesting.  Brinkmann now has a couple of direct drives.  I believe they start around $8K w/out arm.  They're said to be really good.  I've read that Teres is closing shop and the rest are either gone or really big money.

From what I've read there was some collaboration.  Somebody left Denon and went to Victor, or maybe the other way around.  Both Denon and Sony had the tape sensor and magnetic strip thing to regulate speed.  JVC had some great motors on their top tables.  The Goldmund direct drives used JVC motors.

That Sony 8000 and a couple of X series are supposed to be killer.  They sure look it.  I think the entire X series has BSL motors - brushless and slotless.  For some reason I can't access Vintage Knob right now.  They have some great info and photos.  Lets not forget Kenwood.  The L-07D is right up there.  The 990 and 770 (and one other) also have coreless motors.

There is a difference in the torque to platter weight ratio among different brands.  Also a difference in the abruptness of speed correction.  For example, Technics tends to be higher torque and more abrupt correction while Kenwood is smoother.  Platter weight matters.  A high mass platter can sound ponderous with inadequate drive.  Combine a well engineered direct drive with a heavy platter and it doesn't get any better.  Well, maybe there are a couple of servo controlled belt drivers like the Goldmund Reference, or a couple of idlers like Saskia that can compete.

I see what it was.  It didn't have the VPI or equivalent base and it wasn't clear from the description.   It had a board the motor unit and arm was mounted on, but no frame.  Still, it was a bargain at $500.  He could hook up a frame and sell it on Agon for way more than that.

There was also a super rare JVC Victor TT-801 that was sold on audio asylum.  You maybe interested in Sony PS-2250 or Sony PS-2251.

Check out this Denon on Asylum.  There's a great story about half way down the page.
