Dodd Buffer, modifications ?
«
on:

I have looked thru thread after thread and I have come up with various opinions.
Has anyone modified/changed the Sonicap's in there buffer and find them to be more musical ?
Or any other mods that have brought the buffer to a higher level ?
Picture below is of my caps, as they currently are. Thanks.

The easiest mod for musicality is to swap tubes. What are you currently using? Perhaps try a Mullard. Gary's other preamps are very sensitive to tube rolling. Oh yeah, you also might remove the platinum bypass caps... not every one likes them.

I went through a few different mods to my buffer ( all done by Gary)
1. Addition of Gen II bypass caps...helped some but marginal.
2. Change to 6h30p-DR tube, which required extra heat sink and some other mods in layout. Huge improvement all around.
3. Changing caps to Mundorf caps. Another big improvement although it took a little time to settle in.
4. Addition of a variable gain stage. I needed this because my phono stage did not seem to have enough gain. I only use the gain when I play vinyl because I prefer the buffer without the additional gain otherwise.

The electrolytics appear cheap, but without a schematic I can only really tell you to replace the Alps Blue if it's directly the volume control. They got a rep for being good but compared to any resistor based unit they're terrible.
The new caps that may compete with Deulunds might be a great upgrade (Jupiter? Jantzen? I forget)

I've heard that the upgrade to Mundorf caps are an improvement. (Depending on your system. )
Has anyone tried others ?

I have the 6h30p-DR tube, Duelund caps, and I believe the TX2575 resistors. I know I used the resistors in my amps.
I still love mine, though I am going to give the Jensens caps a try.

Couldn't wait on the S/G in Oil. So I got the Silver in Oil.
And it was tight ! Sounds better. Much fuller/deeper sound stage. Can't wait to get them broke in.
