TPA 3116 listening tour?
« on: 26 Mar 2014, 01:47 pm »
Wanted to gauge interest in a TSP3116 listening tour - either interest in listening to one or possibly donating one for the tour.  It probably is not enough power for my speakers but I am really interested in trying one just to make sure.  Am thinking an integrated one with volume control would probably appeal to most people.

If cost is a consideration, maybe people who demo it could make a donation ($5-10?) to whoever provides the demo unit and would cover the cost of sending to the next person on the tour? Thinking out loud...

I have a spare board, but obviously that of itself isn't plug and play.
For $13.99 + a power supply I'd encourage everyone to just buy one.
Mine may not look pretty, but it's functional and it sounds unthinkably
very damn good....... Too good to be true if you know what I mean.

Windchaser,

I'm really intimidated in buying the pieces and trying to assemble an amp but maybe I need to read some more threads to determine whether it would be too hard.

I had never soldered before replacing tweeters on my ONIX mini Strata speakers but I pulled that off and learned REW and the basics of how measure my room. My system has never sounded better. Hmm.... maybe I could build one myself and start my own tour if the amp works but doesn't have enough power. Thinking...

dont forget you can buy it assembled. it is worth the money and if for some insane reason you don't like it I am sure you'll be able to resell with little loss since there are many like you who are interested but lack the diy skills.

No real assembly required. The only soldering I did was the four leads to the speaker terminal strip; other than that, the board is essentially plug and play.

One thing to note is that your board has the output filters that are different from the TI recommended values. The Yuan Jing blue board has the correct values.

I think I could reasonably decide to send a unit out with a PSU of my design as well. If I do it soon, it won't be on custom PCB, just a project board. But that won't be that important, it'll be in it's own box.

I've got the amp handy, blue board. But I want to replace some caps on it, and the inductors, first. Basically I've got to order a handful of parts.

Anyone is welcome to send one out first, but I'm not so sure you'll all be as impressed if it has a typical SMPS or such. Frankly without a power conditioner the amp doesn't sound as good as it could, either. I've tried it straight into the wall and there was an immediate tank in timbre. Oh well...

That would be SWEET and thanks for considering the idea :)

I have both TPA3110 and 3116 amps that I'd be happy to lend or host a listening session for in Houston

By the time you ship one, you may have spent most of the cost of the board....

I'm 15 minutes west of Philadelphia. If there are members close by who want to listen to Skiing Ninja modded crossovers on ONIX mini Strata speakers, ONIX A-60 MKII amp, latest Dragonfly DAC, Anticables, PS Audio duet vs. same setup powered by a TPA 3116, send me a PM and we will see if a hosted listening session could be arranged. Source would be a Dell Win7 laptop streaming Pandora One 192kbs or Spotify running 320.

Edit, I replaced my dead tweeters with Danny's GR-T3 tweeters and lined the inside of the cabinets with DIY dampening instead of no-rez because of cost. The speakers and system sounds really good to my ears.

Murphy,

I am in Princeton, NJ and will drop you a pm.  I plan to power the tpa3116 with 12v battery and/or laptop power supply to try with Zu Soul Superfly speakers.

Someone stole my laptop and hard drive, and piles of other stuff in my backpack. I'm on the search but it doesn't look good.

Hence my PSU and amp for tour is delayed!

:( That's awful news on the laptop theft. Hope you had it password protected, backed up and you get back up to speed quickly.

It's Linux and password protected. I'm ok on information being stolen from comp. But I had student loan info in the backpack...

I have a suspect, but little that can be done.
