X-Omni Dented Dust Cap
« on: 12 Feb 2014, 11:18 pm »
Anyone know how to fix a dented dust cap? I have a pair of x-omnis(av123) and something fell on one of them and pushed it in. I've tried painters/packaging tape and a vacuum hose without success. These dust caps are pretty rigid. I'm not sure what to do next.

Any ideas?

duck tape, just be very carful when using but you will be able to pull it out easily

My technique is to go about an 1/8" into the valley and touch with tape and pull straight up and repeat by working your way around the curve.
Then go another 1/8" and repeat and it should all come back to form.

Vacuum cleaner. Be careful with power, use suction control on hose and/or motor.
Edit;
Oups, already tried. Than more suction power :D
Last method would be thin curved needle.

Try heating it up with a blow dryer before using a high tack tape. The heat will soften it a bit and make it easier to pull the dent out. It may even pop out on it's own when warmed up.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any of them to work. Those dust caps are pretty solid. Maybe I need to crank the tunes with some heavy bass and blast it back into shape.  :thumb:

Bummer.

If you live in a place that gets hot, give it a try after a week of 90 degree temps. The cone materials will be much softer then. I am not sure if the results will be any different but it's worth a try.

Gentle heat with a hair dryer, then use Gorilla tape duct tape.  If this doesn't do the job, the go straight to the pin option... or just contact Danny and buy a new woofer for $27 and keep the old one for a spare.

I could be wrong, but, I think you can push it out from the back.
There is a hole in the magnet that goes all the way through to the dust cap, I think.

The M-165's don't have the vented pole piece that the M-130's do.

Good thought though.

Yep. I Should have read this before removing the woofer to see for myself. No worries though. I wouldn't mind having a dent in the dust cap but I'm planning on selling my x-omnis and wanted to have an aesthetically sound speaker.

I do have an x-voce that has a cabinet damage(I'm going to sell that too), perhaps I'll take a woofer out of it and swap with the x-omni. At least I'll have one good looking speaker set to sell. Danny, do you know if the voce and omnis use the same driver?  :)

They're different. The X-Omni's use the 16 ohm woofer.

No luck. I heated it up with a blow dryer, used gorilla tape and made it worse. Now the dent is bigger. lol These cones are tough!

Anyone have a used woofer they want to sell? New one would cost $29.99 plus $15 shipping. Too much for me. If not, I'll keep them as is.

As I mentioned before, I am going to sell them. I really hate to do this but I lost my hearing in one ear(sudden hearing loss) and cannot enjoy them anymore.

richeydog, sorry to hear about the dust cap and your hearing :(  Your thread really helped me though so thanks! I have a pair of ONIX minis and both dust caps were dented and have small pin holes from previous attempts to fix them. The hair dryer for 30-45 seconds softened them enough to pull them sideways with masking tape. Both dents have been removed. It really bothered me even if it had no audible effect but they look much better so thanks again!

BTW, the mini dust caps look like they are probably almost exactly the same basic semi hard plastic material in case anyone has the same problem and wants to try it.

Richeydog,

How much would you like to get for your Omni's ? What is the veneer on them?
 Thanks,

Yeah it's a bummer for sure.  :| I've had this problem for almost three years. Thought I would get my hearing back(early on) but it's never happened and probably won't unless a miracle ensues.

So, in addition to my x-omnis, I also have an x-voce and a pair of xls encores that aren't being used. The xls encores were my favorite for music listening. Man I loved these! I probably should have sold them all a long time ago but it's hard to let them go, for sentimental reasons.  :)

The veneer is satin black. I'm not sure what to ask for them? A quick google search led me to some used prices of $200, $275, $250, and one as high as $320. Thinking of $175?

Where do you live? I ask because I don't think I can ship them. The foam packaging was semi destroyed when the arrived at my house. I don't believe I can put it back together to make them safe for shipping.
