Hi charmerci and all Audio Circle members.
I spent about an hour listening to a zillions samples of Chet Atkins
to choose one or two CDs that as the most songs I like
and that the price fits my budget,
as far as the quality of sound, I guess I will find out
when the CD is spinning on my Rega Apollo CD player.
Here are my choices, please feel free to comment my choice.
Guitar Legend - The RCA years.
Chet Atkins - The Colombia years.
Chester & Lester
I've been working on the guitar (2 CD)
I will double check my budget and if I have enough money, I will order from Amazon and get them shipped to my wife's aunt and she will bring them with her on the first week of April.
I am wondering on which of these two it will sound best?
Bottlehead Crack + Sennheirser HD-650
or
Decware SE84C + Omega 7F (OB Dipole)

I'm pretty sure that Chet was a stickler for good sound quality in the studio, so I think you'll be pretty safe with anything after the late 50's.

I'm only just rediscovering Chet via youtube. Hence, that's why I started this thread. I just don't know much about his albums.

Hi charmerci.
My wife's aunt will bring with her my five Chet Atkins CDs
on April the 11th at 11.30PM.
We should all be back to my house around 1AM and even if it's late or should I say; Early in the morning I will plug and connect my Bottlehead Crack with my HD650 and enjoy Chet's (CGP = Cerified Guitar Player) wonderful guitar playing.
Since my listening room is built like a bank's safe, nobody will complain about the sound.
By the way, I've been listening on You Tube Chet's music and I like him also as a person.
I lobe the music: Wheel.

Hi rapidsdrummer.
I have listened to Chet Atkins Picks on the Beatles on You tube
but I must say it's not my favorite guitar playing by Chet.
Not that he's not good, I can I put that?
This will sound stupid, well, normal coming from some one like me, but he's too good for the Beatles and I love the Beatles...
Good understand ? ? ?

Hi K.F.
I went on the link.
He's good, bit not exactly the type of playing I like,
however, I will give it a second try and maybe I might change my mind.
Thanks for the link.

Chazro

'sfunny, as much as I love guitar music, be it screamin' Rock, cool Jazz, Flamenco, classical, bluegrass, and so much more, the 1st name that popped into my mind:

Joe Pass

....and I only truly enjoy his solo guitar albums (of which there are many).  I own a few of his group records plus records featuring him as a sideman and while he's always Joe Pass, I almost feel he sounds somehow diluted (except of course for his extraordinary duo records with Ella Fitzgerald).  Anybody that enjoys the guitar would have to love 'Virtuoso 1' (actually it's simply 'Virtuoso', the follow-ups were numbered).  If you haven't heard it you're in for a treat!  I own a few Chet Atkins records, great stuff!, I can't imagine anyone that enjoys Chet NOT enjoying Joe!

Chet is great.  Tommy Emmanuel is one of his CGPs.  Here is a nice duet.

I listened to older jazz exclusively for over 15 years. I like Wes but not all his music is what I care for. I prefer Chet's precise picking style over Wes' one-thumb technique. In jazz, my preference is for Barney Kessel.

Though, before we go any further - Chazro/K.F., I suggest one of you start a "great jazz guitars" thread.  Thanks.

Double post

I've been listening to Chet Atkins Vol.2 - Eight Classic Albums (4 CD's)

I love when he plays with a small combo so he can carry the music. I'm not a fan of his "schmaltzy" music with dressed up men and women choral singers (backup or otherwise) and background strings.

Hum & Strum along With..... 1959  Choral singers....ugh.  :|
Mister Guitar                                 What I like.
After the Riot At Newport      1960  Jazz instrumental group. It's pretty good.
Teensville                                       Some good ones here - again with those singers. Meh.
The Other CA
CA Workshop                                Those two albums are what I love.
The Most Popular Guitar         1961  Mellow with strings - it's alright.
Christmas album                             With those pesky choral singers....

But then again, this was a much different time.

Sound quality is all very good.

Guy,

I'm glad I helped you find this kind of music that you're happy with.

Chet not only stressed high sound quality in the studio but perfection in his own playing. He , most times, would get the background tapes and spend days getting his parts just right before releasing them. His own musical taste prompted RCA to make him A&R producer for the Nashville end of production and he took an active part in the success of many artists in the RCA stable including Elvis. A real all around talent and gentleman in an otherwise dirty business.

Hi charmerci.
Thank you and merci (In French) for suggesting
or mentioning Chat Atkins in one of your post.
Yes, I will repeat myself, but this is a very happy moment in my life
for which you are responsible. Thanks...
How can a (CGP) certified guitar player like Chet Atkins make me so happy,
it's because the way he plays guitar, it's very special,
I would add: It's unique.
Often copied, but never equaled.
I think exactly the same as you, Chet sounds better as a solo
or with very little musicians in the background
and no singers, choral or what ever that will mask the beautiful sound
of his guitar playing.
The only singer that sang with him and that I liked,
it's the video on You tube with Dolly Parton,
that was a really nice combo.
On top of his unique guitar playing, as he got older,
I like his sense of humor.
Like the joke about the swimming pool shaped like a guitar... Amplifier.
Well, thanks again.
With my Bottlehead Crack + HD-650
or my Omega 7F + Decware SE84C+
I should be able to enjoy a lot Mister Guitar.

Guy 13

By the way:
I don't know how to play guitar,
even if in my life, I've own two electric guitars,
but I sure know how to enjoy the sound of a guitar.

Hi No1maestro.
With a name like that, I am sure you know a thing
or two about music and musicians.
I have ordered a two combo CDs of his recording in his house's studio.
According to his website,
they were recorded on a period of 10 years before he died.
Those were never publish and the tapes were found after his death.
Those CDs must be very special, because he made them in his studio,
for himself.
Do you know anything about those or even better, do you have them?

Hi all.
Just finish watching Chet Atkins on You tube.
The video is called:
Chet Atkins (MK) & friends as seen on PBS.
The introduction by Mr. Atkins is excellent,
good scenario and funny at the same time.
Why would he need not one, not two, but three key board players?
And the guy on the small drums ?
And Paul Yandall (Not sure of the spelling) that plays guitar,
Mr. Atkins he's playing guitar, he don't need any one else to spoil his play.
Also, he's got a poker face, no smile, what his he doing on the stage.
I am not talking about the other guitar player with the curly hair.
All that to say that I love Mr. Atkins and that he does not need a symphonic orchestra to help him...

I'm a big fan of Chet and would like I suggest a couple other guitarists you might like if you enjoy Chet's style of music.  The first is another CGP, who wrote several songs that were recorded by many artists, including Chet.  His name is Jerry Reed, the same guy who was in those Burt Reynolds movies. Jerry was also a good singer.  On guitar, especially finger picking, Jerry was one of the best. He was also one of Cher's favorite guitarists. Check out the YouTube video if Chet and Jerry playing the Ray Charles song, Georgia. Jerry's voice and guitar playing on that song are amazing.

Check out the look on Chet Atkins' face while he watches Jerry play. Chet was a much better technical player, one if the best to ever live, but he loved Jerry's creativity. I'm a huge fan of both guys.

Okay one more of Jerry and Chester!

One more suggestion. Before Chet's era there was a guy who invented this style if picking, called Travis picking. His name was Merle Travis and is one of my favorites as well. He played with a cool sense of melody and a joy that Jerry Reed had throughout his performances. Merle also made difficult tubes seem effortless, like the guitar was just playing itself. Merle Travis was a cool dude and a brilliant performer. Check him out on YouTube.
