Bdp1/Bdp2 installation tutorials needed..
« on: 5 Feb 2014, 09:37 pm »
I AM NEW IN THIS FORUM AND I ADDRESS A REQUEST TO BRYSTON MANUFACTURERS ABOUT THE URGENCE TO HAVE A STEP BY STEP AND STRAIGHTFORWARD TUTORIAL TO INSTALL AND MANIPULATE THE BDP1/BDP2 TRANSPORT .

THIS UNIT SO WELL MADE DESERVES A BETTER MANUAL THAT COULD BE DIVIDED IN TWO PARTS :

ONE FOR BEGINNER  EXPLAINING IN PLAIN ENGLISH AND FRENCH WITH POSSIBLE ILLUSTRATIONS HOW TO DOWNLOAD MUSIC, HOW TO FORMAT DISCS AND SAVE -COPY -BACK UP FILES , HOW TO MANIPULATE FILES WITH A TABLET...

THE SECOND PART MORE TECHNICAL SHOULD BE RESERVED TO SKILLED PERSONS , TECHNICIANS  AND COMPUTER GEEKS.

THANK YOU

I agree also,as I had to call on Chris rice to help me set my BDP-2 up with external drive, even DBPoweramp as I hadn't a clue.
LOL,still can't click and drag songs to put on a thumb drive even though Chris showed me once.
I believe he's working on a program where you can put songs on a TD when you are using the BDP to make playlists :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:..
NICE AND SIMPLE as I'm a straight meat n potatoes kinda guy :).

I have this on my agenda to have ready once our new firmware is ready to start shipping. Besides sound quality, I think the primary reason customers would want to buy a BDP type product from us or any other brand is the fact that it's a dedicated player and not a "computer", so I don't want to have to expect people to have a certain degree of knowledge of computers to make it work. Thanks!

I'm looking forward to the new firmware. I'd also love it if Bryston produced an Android and Apple app. It's a bit frustrating to be limited to 3rd party support for tablet/smart phone use. Fortunately, there's a decent MPD Android app. There's just no telling how long it'll be supported/updated.

As a future bdp owner who has read all the related threads...ALL...and who has limited (average) computer knowledge, I'd like video tutorials as well.  I watched the YouTube videos but any more detailed videos would be helpful. Thx

One tough part of this is the home network. Depending on how it is set up, there could be several problems using/accessing any network device. I'm not sure how they can address that since everyone has different routers/setups.

I agree with the comments posted here, that the BDP-2 manual (and other Bryston manuals) would benefit greatly not just from revision but from a complete rethinking. Since Bryston has been very good to us on this forum and others, what would you think of creating a user wiki for the BDP-2 and letting Bryston use it, if they're interested, as the basis for a manual (or an alternative manual posted online)?

One of the major problems with manuals such as this one is that they're often written by techies or company experts who are intimately familiar with the product and, with this background, may have difficulties projecting the needs and tech background of the average user. Thus, some functions might not be explained fully, understandably, or in some cases at all.

As I peruse the BDP threads, it's clear that, while many users are expert in computer and network technologies, many are not and purchased the BDP to avoid technological hurdles. It is far more likely that the techies participate in this and other forums, so there may be a significant base of BDP users whose needs are not addressed by the manual.

Your thoughts?

Cheerio,

Rich

I couldn't agree more.  For a person who does not have a tech heavy background, they are very difficult to understand when trying to set up.   They need to take it step by step and explain a little better.  A lot of assumptions that the user knows comes into the game with a lot of the shortcut knowledge.  For example, just to access the Bryston pages, one may ask do I capitalize a certain letter?  Is there a .com on the end of that?

The primary purpose of my job at Bryston is product training, and I see materials development as critical to this. I don't think we'll see a full switch to wiki away from printed manuals, but it is a strong possibility for being a resource for the most up to date info. After all, many of the non-tech-inclined folks we're trying hardest to teach aren't used to looking anywhere but the printed manual for answers yet. Alas, I'm one guy and have other responsibilities as well, but I'm making this kind of work a priority.

Hi Guys,

Sorry just noticed the thread tonight, must have posted just before everyone started asking about speakers and DSD.  Truth is we are in need of much better documentation regarding our software for the BDP.  Problem has been it hasn't been until very recently that we have settled on a software design for our interface, Manic Moose.  The BDP is also possibly our most complicated piece as it is essentially a computer.  With that said it's also our first venture into this product category so we have a guy who knows enough to make, but has never had the need to document anything that wasn't meant to be worked on by anyone else besides himself or someone else of similar background.  On the other side we have a guy who has written all the manuals for each Bryston product made in the last two decades, but for amps, preamp, Dac's, etc but not for a device with extensive network interfacing and other third party peripherals.

One of our goals with Manic Moose is a full blown support page with basic setup and configuration to the most technical bits of into a developer could want, plus DSD and a speaker management system.  I made that last bit up, manic moose won't manage your speakers; however it will play DSD.

In the mean time we have posted a sort of introductory video to the BDP current firmware build.
