Hi allbeen on the hunt for an amp my newly acquired Cornwalls. Plenty of good suggestions from friends suggesting tubes for my Cornwalls but what about First Watt amp? I'll be using a Dehavilland Ultra 3 as a preamp.Any experiences anyone would like to share?
Got an email from Mark at Reno HiFiThe F3 cannot be driven by most tube preamps. Solid state is fine.
Roscoeii makes a good point.Ive been using a McCormack DNA 225, considered one of the more non solid state sounding solid state amps, with the cornwalls. I wouldn't characterize the sound from the Cornwalls as shouty but rather thin in the midrange. The M2s may just be the balance I may be looking for.FreoMark says the M2 is fine with tube preamps.
F3 F4 (although your preamp gain may be borderline if you like it loud) SET SEP Lin
Hi Emil,Let's say you're like me and have a decent understanding of physics and electro-acoustics, mildly allergic to audiophoolery silliness, coupled with no irresistible urge to drop $5k on a 10 watt amp. But you want something SS that operates somewhat like a tube amp. Say, a power transconductance amplifier. For speakers with >100db/watt sensitivity. Basically a magnifying glass for low level linearity (first 0.1 watt), which may or may not be of psycho-acoustic importance to you. What to do?I contacted this company http://www.abacus-electronics.com/32-1-Amplifiers.html and had them modify this amp http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/abacus/ampino.html to my needs, including of course 120v compatibility. The spring clip>banana terminals surgery must be self performed, but otherwise ready to go out of box, if bare wire connection one end is ok.No noise, excessive heat, unreliability or quirkiness so far. Just music....if that's your thing. My 2ccheers,AJ
Freo and RoscolliCan you tell me bit about your systems?
Not exactly a First Watt, more of a first (and only) 2 watts amp.http://www.decware.com/cgi-bin/yabb22/YaBB.pl?num=1362947485
