headless mac mini
« on: 8 Jan 2014, 04:00 pm »
I have a mac mini that I am using as a server connected to a two terabyte hard drive.  all my music has been downloaded in lossless format.
I am using a separate DAC fro yeo, the monica usb model.
How can I set this up to run headless (with no dedicated computer screen) instead I would use my iPhone or iPad to run the computer and choose tracks?
the screen and keyboard and mouse are not waf friendly, I am told.
Thank you in advance,

Than k you for he links that I didn't come across in my search earlier today.
Not sure if there is a definitive answer in all that though.
Sounds as if I will have to do my own experimenting.
Happy listening to ll.

Here is a thought a little from left field.
What about a mimo USB touch screen?
Say, run your iTunes via the touch screen?
Price seems pretty reasonable and a 10 inch touch screen seems pretty big.
There are also other size & price options.
Here is the link.

Something to think about.
Best of luck with your project.

I run a headless mac mini. I use iTunes (with BitPerfect app) to play music. To select and play music, I use the Remote app from the app store.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/remote/id284417350?mt=8

The Remote app lets you control iTunes. A lot of the mac music playback software like Pure Music and others offer iTunes integration so the Remote app will work with those as well.

Not super sure if I answered your question, so feel free to ask.

In addition to the good advice from others to use Remote from iPad/iPhone to control your player (eg iTunes) using a VNC controller to manage my Mac mini has allowed me to run a headless Mac mini music server.
