One thing that's been a problem for me are the in-store auditions. I can use my own music player and amp and listen for 20 minutes if they allow that, but when I get home and listen at length, the headphone usually sounds different from what it did in the store. Since even closed headphones rarely block more than 10 db at the upper frequencies and much less than 10 db lower down, and since the background noise level will be about 20-25 db higher in the store, I hear things at home that are buried in the background noise in the store.
