The type of cap and value of C1 is much different in the vanilla 55W compared to the 55W N+. What determines the type and value of this cap?
Is it done empirically by trying and listening? From memory it was ginger who   was experimenting with this cap and suggested the current C1 in Nirvana+.

Yes, you are right Paul.

I did tests with the suggested cap, and found it to be outstanding.  The very large value, impossible with a film cap, ensures no phase shift at all at very low frequencies, and the small size reduced self-inductance to vanishingly low levels, ensuring wonderful HF performance.

Cheers,

Hugh
