X-omni question
« on: 13 Dec 2013, 03:51 am »
I'm considering building some x-omnis as my front mains but had a few questions.  A few years ago I heard some x-statiks at a gtg and I was amazed at the wide soundstage.  It was completely different than anything I heard at the gtg, or the x-ls's that I own, and I've wanted some ever since.  As much as I would like to build some x-statiks, I'm definitely a beginner at woodworking and crossover building.  The fewer components and smaller enclosure of the x-omni seems much more manageable to me than the x-statik.  Would the x-omni's be good for front L/R speakers?  Would they be close in sound to the x-statik?  Finally, if I used an x-voce as a center, would the difference in sensitivity be an issue?

Thanks

I never built anything out of wood and yet I ordered the complete set x-statik x-voce and x-omni. Got myself a table circular saw and a router, compressor, circular sander and paint gun and some clamps including corner ones. Its going to be easy lol.
I say go ahead and order the x-statik kit it will be amazing with x-voce. And then ob servo subs :) ....... can't wait!!!!!!

While I can't comment about the ease of building the X-Omni's, since I bought mine, I can say that the X-Omni's work well as front L/R speakers.  I used them in that role for a while until I upgraded to the GR Research O-3's, which are a definite step up from the Omni's.  But for the price of the Omni's, they are very difficult to beat.  They through a huge and effortless soundstage, and I love watching sports with Danny's omni speakers.  I've also heard the X-Statiks, and while the Omni's may be a shade less than what they are, it's pretty close.  Also, my guess would be that the X-Voce is a pretty good fit with the Omni's as mains.

But please do remember that the Omni's like space.  You can't stick them up against the walls and expect them to sound good.  During my experimentation with them, they needed to be at least 2 feet off of the walls to sound good, and 3 feet is preferable.  The X-Statiks are the same, BTW.

bad idea on the x-omni's up front. Use the X-statiks up front and omni's as side or rear surround. I just happen to have a pair of X-statiks mint condition on speaker forum for sale :). In Atlanta area. The two types of speakers are nowhere close in sound to each other.

Shrug.  If you say so.

Not going to argue about using the Omni's as surrounds though.

As I understand the concept for a 5.1 system the X-Static's were designed to be the front L/R mains, the X-Voce the center, and the X-Omni's the L/R surrounds. Just as the O-3's were designed to be the surrounds for the OB-5 and OB-7.  However, as it turned out the X-Omni's and O-3's will both work very well as L/R mains.

One approach you could use if you are unsure about building the cabinets/crossovers and/or affording all five speakers at once would be to buy the X-Voce for the center and build the X-Omni's for your mains. Then, if after building the Omni's you feel more confident in your abilities, you can build a pair of X-Statics. Whenever you got the X-Statics done you could set them up as your L/R mains and move the X-Omni's to the surround positions and have a 5 channel system.

Then if you like you could build an OB sub to fill out the system.

The Statik's wouldn't really be any tougher to build than the  Omni's.      The actual box is probably smaller   for the Statiks  witha a tall front baffle  .
Both come with fully assembled c/o's so that  shouldn't be an issue for you. In either case,  probably a good idea to consider the no rez and c/o upgrades

As mentioned above,  both should ideally be 3'  or more from  the front & side walls

Good advice from emac and Mike.

The X-Omni's work great as mains and do through a really nice sound stage. But sensitivity is down from the X-Statik's and dynamics.
