Ah, sorry to hear this. He, along with Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery and Tal Farlow were my favorite jazz guitarists. One of my fav recording which I will play tonight is "Interplay" with Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard and Philly Joe Jones. Hall has such a fresh, modern sound in this setting.
As all of them, he will be missed.

A very tasteful and understated player. I will go to either 'Jim Hall & Pat Metheny' or Sonny Rollins' 'The Bridge'. Would welcome some solo album suggestions.

Yes indeed, this is sad news. Hall was a personal favorite and had that unique hallmark sound that so distinguishes all great musicians. Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Bill Frisell, John Abercrombie, Mick Goodrick, and many others, have cited him as a major influence. Chip Stern writing for JazzTimes tagged him as the 'Emperor of Cool' and wrote, " He is a genius at playing next to nothing and imbuing each note with a deep spiritual hue". I'll have "Sonny Rollins with Jim Hall" on the TT tonight to remind myself just how good he was.

WPFW-FM in DC has a show called "G-Strings" on Sunday mornings 9am-noon ET. The host, Tom Cole, is a major Jim Hall fan and always starts off with a Hall cut. I practically guarantee a Jim Hall smorgasbord this week. You can listen on the net if not in the area.

I love his work from the trios with Jimmy Giuffre in the late 1950s onward. A brilliant and thoughtful man, if you've ever seen interviews with him, and a buddy of mine who was his neighbor in recent years said he was an extremely personable guy, always happy to stop for a chat while walking his dog on the street.

My favorite "Concierto". I like the title of "Emperor of Cool".
Hey dB, great jazz station here, WDCB, also on the internet.

+1 coverto!
Suggested works with Jimmy Giuffre:
Trav'lin' Light
Western Suite
The Easy Way
Also with Bill Evans:
Interplay
Undercurrent
A truly special, gifted musician.
Very sad.

I couldn't pick a favorite Hall, just couldn't. But if I had to do so, three live albums from the mid-70s would be at the top of my list with a slight preference for the A&M recording:
Jim Hall Live! (A&M/Horizon, 1976)
Jim Hall and Red Mitchell (Artists House, 1978)
Live in Tokyo (A&M/Horizon Japan, 1977)
Of course, I still have all the above on vinyl, as God intended. Also, I like to reach for a well used copy of "Good Friday's Blues" by the Modest Jazz Trio from April 1960, with Red Mitchell switch-hitting on piano and Red Kelly taking over bass responsibilities ... love it. In fact I'll go listen to that right now, lucky me.

Thanks martyo, rockadanny, & Kenneth. Oooh... Paul Desmond? I'm a big Desmond fan, think I'll start there.

Just hearing this news. What a talent and an incredible recording career. Couple to add to the list:
Jim Hall and Friends 1991. Live recording with some fabulous duets of Jim and several greats including Mulligan and Brookmeyer.
Folk Jazz 1959 with Bill Smith . If you like the trios with Giuffre and Desmond's stuff you'll find this exceptional.
