Rebuild vesion 3.1, Modified ABX/LaDolce Audio OB Baffles.

I wanted to try out the round port in lieu of the rectangle. I like the way the round port looks and it works and sounds better than before.

These do all the audiophile things very well, resolving, the sound stage is deep, wide, and tall. Its allmost like I have suround sound now?!
I have been searching for the low bass sound, kinda like car stereo's. Now I have that sound and I am not running my subwoofer. I had to use the input cable for my other amp. So I am now bi-amping. I have the Mono Extreams on the 15" and Tweeter and the 18"
gets its own amp. Its the chi-fi fun-fi Aiyma A07 with Sparkos 3602 op-amps. Sounds good for now will be upgraded at some point.

Thanks for lookin'

Wayne,

I just stumbled onto the La Dolce Audio website, so I did a quick Google search and found your posts here -- and then remembered reading your posts months ago. How do you like the speakers now, and how far away from the front wall are they positioned?

Regards,

Michael in Beaver country.

Thanks. Did you check out ABX Audiophiles https://abxaudiophiles.org/home
I have the baffles about four feet from the wall, about five feet inside edge to inside edge. I sit about the same distance from the back wall. Now that I have rebuilt them, I like the way they look. I do have the final version comming up that will be made out of two foot by four foot by one inch butcherblock. I already have two and will be getting the other two soon.
These are very good sounding and I love them. Not only do I have clear and resolving sound, very wide and deep soundstage but also textured, layered, deep, and yes resolving bass.
I would encourage any diy'ers to build a set of these.
La Dolce Audio came out with a 10 inch version of the coxial. So the baffle could be maybe one foot wide and shorter for better looks and same great sound. You could make baffle in two sections position the 18's closer to the wall or wherever.
Anyway thanks,

Wayne in Oregon

Just finished building these monsters.  Fully OB planar magnetic line arrays.  6 planar midrange drivers and 16 planar tweeters per speaker.  For bass duties I have 2 servo controlled OB sub drivers per side.

Specs are 98db efficiency and a ruler flat 6 ohm impedance.  Which means my 300b amp and my 2a3 amp can both drive them easily.  Hell, even my Type 45 SET should be fine.  I’ll have to try it out next.

Wiring drivers:

This is what I have been working on for the past year. It's a dual hybrid system: The woofer is in a sealed cabinet, filtered active, mid and high are open baffle, filtered passive. It is powered by a 4 channel Bryston 9B3.
The sound is absolutely awesome, and this will probably end my DIY loudspeaker projects.

Nice!

Is it your own design?

Yes it is. Quite a bit of trial and error, but I am finally at a point where I feel that it's very hard to improve the sound.

Experimenting with the F-15/Alphas today, I pulled them as far out into the room as their speaker wires would allow. I was so surprised by their improved SQ I'll probably have to get some longer wire and try for a couple of more feet.  :thumb:

5.5 feet out from the front wall is a nice target if the room allows.

I'm running some Lii Fast 15s (but the xizi versions), really think they are great sounding speakers. But found that they can't tolerate sub sonics, would distort pretty badly. Once i passed them off to the Beta 15s, all is fine. Right now experimenting with dual Beta 15s in a compound configuration, using my old test baffles to hold the back drivers. Building permanent back baffles that will move the drivers closer to the front ones. Then I have some Heil AMTs to mount on top. The compound setup gives me more output, but also increases the side null alot. The OBs are 2' from the sidewalls so this helps in that regard.

Have you tried those Fast 15's with a flea watt SET amp?

I tried with an older Bottlehead S.E.X. amp I had on hand. May not of been enough wattage (2 amps?) or just a mediocre design for speaker app. It doesn't have any of the upgrades installed available at the time I built it. It worked but I felt the W4S M-pre/M-amp combo sounded fuller. Using Mogami balanced signal cables and Analysis Plus Oval 9 speaker cabling.

Then again maybe using the "D" amps contributed to the distortion problem, due to the extra watts?  A better tube amp or line stage is something I can explore later. But for now it going to be a DSP/DAC line stage with an hybrid active/passive crossover deal. Haven't even started with EQ filtering yet.

The Fosi Za3 pictured is for the Heils, when I get those installed and setup with protection caps and fuses. I do plan on upgraded the Op-amps in the Fosi amps, not sure which ones yet. Will be using Supra 1.6 wires for those. And the Dayton class AB plate amps with Mogami 3103 are for the Beta 15s.

It's difficult for most of us to place our OB's near the middle of the room especially if it requires wife approval. My baffles are heavy but I did reduce their size and added handles which make them easier to move out into the room and away from walls when playing. When not in use I move them back closer to the walls.

If I can attach rolling castors I think I may give that a try. I'm thinking near middle of the room placement with movable baffles could be a solution for those who can't do room treatments.

Did some measuring and my baffles are currently 6 ft from the rear wall behind them, 5 ft from side walls and 10 ft from the wall in front of them.
