Not sure what you mean by, "flipping one of the backs".  :scratch: Sorry.

I've got a few decent lengths of CAT5e. I'd be more than willing to donate to her project.
Of course, that begs the question of how I'd use the wire.....four runs for '+' and four for '-',
Use the solids for '+' and stripes for '-', ........ or..........???????  :duh:

Bob

If, for example, in the picture were she is gazing the masterpieces she created, the back panel with port and binding posts in the speaker on the right is flipped, i.e., port to the left and binding posts to the right, the speakers will be mirror image . If assembled the way they appear in the picture, they will not. Of course, XO will need to be connected accordingly to this configuration (apologies for mentioning it :green:.)

This is the most gratifying and inspiring thread I had ever encounter in AC. It goes beyond human touch and DIY Lab oriented threads, it is an admirable example of true American family values working at their best. Thank you Bob.

Mario

I realize yeldarb beat me at clarifying and making the mirror image suggestion...of course, Bob, unless you already had that in mind for the final assembly and the picture represented only an assembly line convenience.

As photographed, rotate one of the backs 180 degrees before final attachment so that both tweeters can be on the inside of the final speaker location (or outside).
Ahh....yes...
I have indeed taken this in consideration (as you'll see in later pics). I wasn't sure if this was what you're talking about. Yea, the front panel is symmetrical, so all is good. I haven't asked her if she'd like the tweeters inside or outside. At the onset of this build I did explain that we could 'flop' the speakers so the tweeters are on whichever side she prefers.

Thanks VERY MUCH for the offers of wires. We'll see how things go. I'll let her catch up on  reading the thread and see what she thinks about making some cables. If she digs the idea, I'll PM those that have offered. Thank you again. The camaraderie warms my heart so much I can't put in words.

Ok...........
We got some more....to say the least.

- The XO lead-outs have been wired to the speakers.
- The filling/batting has been "stuffed".
- The first test run of the speakers has taken place.

We now officially have the first song played through the speakers. haha

Here we go.....

Wiring the XO to the drivers;

Adding the stuffing;

Drilling pilot holes for the back panel;

Installing screws;

The speakers are completely assembled and ready for their first test run.
Abbie installs the speaker wires while I grab the rest of the equipment;

I'll be donating my beloved 20+ year old Sony two channel receiver to her room. I'll be missing this piece.
For temporary use, the Samsung tablet will be streaming the music via Pandora.
I shot this photo as it'll be the last time I have these pieces "in play". Oh....how I'll miss them. :(

Abbie selects her first song on the tablet.
Turns out to be:
{Click on this}: >> Adele "Rolling in the Deep" <<

THEY WORK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She gets serious, (the game face is on) grabs a chair, thumbs through the YouTube channel that her and I have created and finds an appropriate song to play.

You could say the first song that's played through the speakers when it's extablished that things are "right", the settings are correct, the adjustments have been made, the volume has been set and she's ready to hear what these are capable of, she plays:

>> Mop Mop - "So High" << (great song!!)
She puts her fingers on the woofers to feel if everything "feels" even, and both speakers are doing their job.

Yip. Done for the night. No more building, no more sawdust, no soldering, no more cameras.
It's time to dance.

Dear Abbie and Bob
and all Audio Circle members.
What I was looking for and expecting for quite a while,
just happened.
Thanks Bob, you posted a picture of Abbie with a super smile
and a face of satisfaction and happiness.
I did not cry (After all, I am a man and men don’t cry for sadness
or happiness), but had tears in my eyes,
because I was so happy. (For me and for you two)
This is the best post since I’ve started has an Audio Circle members.
Abbie, you have a super dad, but, you are also a super daughter,
you should be proud of yourself and your father.
What you did, is not something we see every day.
This is what I call the experience of a life time.
Enjoy your master piece and jump to the neck of your father
to thank him for that nice, gratifying experience.
Thanks to you two, you brought joy in my life,
which is required being away from my three children and my country.

Nicely Done, congratulations to you both.
Remember, if anybody asks, I wasn't here.
So, if I want to build a pair of speakers, I can borrow Abbie right?
Both take care and I look forward to hearing about your accomplishments
in the future. Abbie, I do hope you will stay in touch with us to remind us (me)
how inept I really am. This has been a lot of fun for me to watch.
Thanks Bob, I owe you one.

Unofficially
Don

Hi Bob and Abbie and all Audio Circle members.
What about a new task for Abbie.
Abbie could write/post her impressions of that (new) experience.
Only a few words would do.
This time without the help of the father.
How about that for an easy task?

Knowing personally the thrill of building one's own speakers this thread has been most enjoyable, but the father/daughter element is just priceless....

Kudo's to Bob and Abbie!!  :thumb: :thumb:

I originally built my first amp from a kit to save $, but an unanticipated side effect was the satisfaction of realizing "I made that" when I listened to my system or shared it with friends. So I have some idea how she must feel. Starting with some lumber and ending up with complete speakers is a whole 'nother level though.

CONGRATS!!!

Those look great!  I never thought of painting speakers white, but these are perfect.

Is Abbie going to have a GAS get together to show off her new speakers? Throw the Hawthornes out of the man cave and fire her speakers up. I'd make the trip down to hear them. Loved the build pics and her work looks great.  Congratulations.   :thumb:

Wow, those are some amazing complements. Thanks all!

To answer a few questions;

Mark - Have a GAS get-together to listen to my daughters speakers. Now that's an idea I hadn't thought of. Might have to give that one some thought.  :thumb:

Bob (Viggen) - The white is just a primer. We'll give it one more coat of white before they get the blast of color she's got planned for them.

Guy - It didn't occur to me to have her type a few words. I think that would be a great idea. Thank you.
When all is said and done, and they're playing in her room, I'll have her type something. Please don't let me forget.

Don - I understand you weren't here, and I won't tell anyone. The secret is safe with me.  :wink:

Thanks again all!  :D

The camaraderie warms my heart so much I can't put in words.

Bob thank you so much for sharing this experience with us. This picture essay has bought a few tears to our collective eyes and warmed our collective hearts. Simply WONDERFUL.

Most of us are here because we love DIYing audio equipment. My dad infected me with this "disease" in the early 70s when he funded and enabled me to build a simple 3 way speaker as well as a small amplifier (my reward was a Sony TCK 5 - Sony's first series of front loading cassette decks). It has been 40 years now and every few years I get the DIY itch again. I hope Abbie too builds on this experience and carries the DIY torch on for the next generation. From what I can tell we DIyers are a dying breed (at least in India).

I don't know if you remember but about 18 months ago when I was building my speakers you were the first to encourage me to share my pictures on Audiocircle. Before that I had never bothered to share my experiences with anyone (my friends think I am more than a little mad because I like to build 'coffins' when for less money I could buy that king of all brands - Bose) because I have always kept my "madness" under wraps. I never thanked you for giving me that opportunity. It was a wonderful experience to have my work appreciated for the first time since my Dad passed away 25 years ago.

We have never met, but everything you have shared I can tell you are a wonderful man, raising a wonderful family. God bless all of you.

Scott, I like that idea. It would be easy enough to get done, that's for sure.  :thumb:

Navin, Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Some of the complements here have me speechless. I truly thank you for each and every word of that.
