Well put R.  I agree that only time will tell if the Dragonfly will be a classic.  and there are alot of products in the "Punches above it's price class" category.  I think my intent to put the Dragonfly into the classic category is because each of the products picked to date were a great value, performed above thier price point and were widely distributed and enjoyed.  These products allowed us to get the first glimpes of high end audio.  There are so many that want to jump into computer audio and need to be led there with a good value product to learn on and move up from there.  My journey in this hobby has always been upward trying something different every time.  The Dragonfly will push me into new and better products in the future.   I'll put it a differnt way.  I predict the Dragonfly will be a classic.  Volocity will tell the story.  The Dragonfly is widely distributed.

My first pair of speakers came out of my folks console radio and were mounted in cardboard shoe boxes with the top taped on.   I now have Line Source Speakers.  The Design Acoustic D-2 Speakers propelled me forward.

My first experience with portable audio was a transistor radio.  Then a Walkman listening on cassette with headphones.  Now I have my iPhone loaded with some good sounding files.  My laptop has alot of high rez on it.    The Walkman propelled me forward.

My point is we all started somewhere and there was a middle of the road product that launched us forward.   I would call that a classic.

I think it hard to throw new products into this group. Especially something like DAC's. DAC's are like computers. They get faster and cheaper every year. For all we know the market could get flooded with low cost DAC's in the months to come.

I have to agree. Where is the list of classic CD transports?

To my way of thinking, "classic" implies a timelessness that digital cannot claim. The entire field is too turbulent and transient. It isn't hard to imagine a time quite soon when CD hardware ceases to manufactured. The CD player will be added to the pile of VCRs and Cassette Decks, not the list of classics.

And separate DACs are slowly being overshadowed by preamps and integrates that incorporate one in their design. I just hope this comment doesn't betray too badly my inability to keep up.

It's no hula hoop.

Soon you may be developing speaker designs with DAC-PRE/Class D Amps with a tube buffer built in your crossover networks.  The Jupitor caps and Tube Buffer will be more than the DAC/Amp chips.  Ugh It could happen.  All on one board.

How about the Adcom GFA-555 II. I bought one new back in the late 80's and I am still using it today.

Heard that,

I had the original MK1 with the rack mount handles. It had a PWS upgrade by John Curl I think from audio express magazine back in the day. Miss that puppy.... Switched to a McCormack 0.5 which had better bass/treble...... miss that one too  :duh:

The deal AV123 had on the LS speakers at the introductory price is still hard to believe.

Stuff others do not know is great.. In the used market.
For me that is the Audio research Sp-15.
Now the Audio research Sp-10 is praised all the time. It listed for $3 new.. it is SELLING for a little more than that now.
The Sp-15 was damned with faint praise.. mostly for it's big increase in price List $6,000.
I owned both a Sp-10 and a SP-15 at the same time. The Sp-15 crushes the Sp-10 for sound quality.
I paid $1,500 for my Sp-15. And basically sold the Sp-10 for such a high profit it paid for the SP-15.
Typical. Plenty of so called best stuff is really all legend and not fact. Especially when you compare it by current price.
I guess what I am saying don't believe the hype about plenty of stuff out there,

Yeah "Dude".......ya'll check out the new (old) SONY......seems their own technology has caught them from behind. What do we call classic technology re-invented ? PRICELESS !
