Hello all....
 I am taking a general poll. How much of you current system cost is spent on speakers, non planar folks too.
You don't need to divulge how much you spent on speakers and associated electronics.
Just what percentage of the entire system cost was allotted for speakers.

Lets consider all prices retail, at time of purchase to keep the scale the same.

Example... speakers $10,000 divided by total system (include speakers)  $30,000 = .333 or 33.3% spent on speakers.

I spent 39.4% of my system cost on speakers.

I included cables, power cords, conditioners etc. and my equipment rack too but I didn't add room treatments which I made myself for real cheap anyway.

I guess I should ask another question...are your speakers your the most expensive part of your system ?

Mine are the most expensive..they are twice the cost of my next expensive component, the pre amp.

Between 50-60 percent depending on configuration.

Magnepan 3.6 speakers new: $5,300.
Bryston 4B-SST²amp ....new: $5,000.
Bryston BP-26 preamp ..new: $5,000.
Rest of system mostly used about.. $15,000. (including 2 power conditioners, and wires)
So my speakers are only 17% of my total system cost.
The Magnepan 3.6 are a great value.

Though  I might (in a few years) buy Magnepan 20.7s.. ($15,000.) which would bring my speaker percentage up to: 37% or so.
Even with Maggie 20.7 I would KEEP the 4B-SST² amp only.

Back in the 1980s.. I was into spending 50% or more on speakers..
I kept my $3,200 Infinity Speakers for 17 years.. As I gradually improved the other stuff.
About four years ago I spent a LOT, and bought the Bryston and the Magnepan at the same time. They seemed a great matchup.  So predeciding spending a percentage of $$$ on speakers may be an interesting idea for newbies.. For some people, like me, it means little.

(the next thing would be a $4K or $5K turntable after the 20.7s. Or instead of the 20.7s.. I like my current Maggies a lot.)

I got to thinking about this and realized that this figure is skewed since I buy used when possible and have built kit speakers.  My LS9 speakers have about $3000 in them, but sell for about $8000- value at say $6000.  My used Moscode 401HR was bought at about 1/2 price of new and then upgraded.  It would be a $4500 amp, have about $2800 in it.  My dac was experimental fore runner of Eric Heider's efforts to bring out a new unit- about $600 in parts so it's really hard to put a value on it... say $1000.  My Pre amp listed at $3300 when I bought it, yet prices of newer ones have dropped to less than half of that. My phono pre was about $1000. My server was about $600.  Wires are about $500.  Used JVC turntable is worth a couple of hundred, the cartridge was about $350.  A Technics SP10 is a semipermenant loan from a friend- about $1000.

When I think in terms of worth of the system vs. actual money invested....
About %40 is closer to the value ratio
