They're projecting images over the facade of buildings and turning the structure itself into part of the "art".

Everything you saw was displayed by typical flat panel TV display units (including the massive one on the floor). All the 3D imaging you saw was from those televisions. A video camera captured the entire sequence. No "trickery" other than robotic arms swirling around some TV's was used.

As someone whos has study both eyes and ears (with a focus on the ears) I can tell you that our hearing/auditory system is by far much more complex than our vision system.
It is much easier to fool the eyes than it is the ears. And we know very little about the hearing system unlike the vision system.

Every single vision + hearing imparied person I have met have all given the same answer to the question...
what sense would you rather still have, vision or hearing...?

Actually Bob in St Louis it was not done that way. this was done with "projection mapping"  those are not HD TV , they are blank surfaces with multiple projectors focused on them. it is all controlled with software. YES, the 3D effect is an illusion. the illusion is created with the multiple projectors. The projectors are not physically moving, they are only displaying the pixels that are needed at a certain time.

This technology is being used everyday within the corporate audio/video world (in which i work) and the entertainment biz. projecting onto moving surfaces is not the norm though. To time all  the sequences and the pre production must have been a nightmare on this one.

pretty sure this demo was to demo the mechanical arms and not the projection mapping.

you tube Projection mapping/Pandoras Box, there are a lot of cool examples. You can map anything. normally it is done with a system called PANDORAS BOX

This is a very extreme example of projection mapping.
