It is still the case, but with the Volume control and remote, you can switch using the remote...Not need to get up and manually move the physical switch (input selection). Same for DSD rates, but I have heard that they now have autosensing between DSD64 and 128.
Trade off yes, but if you want pure DSD....for me its not a big deal, even for manual switching, as I keep my DSD playlist separate (I have no remote control option). I could also choose to convert to PCM on the fly, if I just wanted continuous music from a mixed format playlist. Lampi is PCM is already giving a famous sound.
You have to realize that Lampi PCM and DSD have completely separate architecture. PCM uses a Dac chip, DSD does not. With the VC option, PCM is passed digitally to the DAC chip (digital input), while DSD is passed in the analog domain to the output tubes (analog input)...all switchable via remote control.
