Do Magnepans Bottom Out?
« on: 13 Sep 2013, 06:41 pm »
I'm thinking about getting 20.7's (or at least 3.7's), but I am concerned that the crazy bass in movies might bottom them out.... Any thoughts or experience with this? Thanks!

Even if you bottom them out it won't damage them.
If you augment their bass output with a sub and you use bass management in your processor or receiver
you won't be in danger of bottoming them out. This also leaves more power
for the rest of spectrum above the bass region.

Not that I ever noticed even with bass heavy tracks at pretty high volumes.
They will get to a point where the bass just isn't there because the speaker doesn't go that low.
I think you're worrying about nothing.

With the push-pull drivers of the 20.7 it can result in damage if the wires hit the magnets. This is not the case with the 3.7.

No problem with my 3.6's, with or without using my SVS subwoofer. Oh and have a high current amplifier.

Yes, they can bottom out.

So would most speakers attempting to do subwoofer work.

Doing so repeatedly can eventually end up harming the speaker. Most maggie folks who use them for HT for action movies and sci fi with loud effects get a sub for that purpose.
