Hi fellas,

Just wanted to let you guys know that Soundsmith received my Sumiko Blackbird on Aug 7. They advised me that it would take about 10-12 weeks to retip. I figured doubling that time would be best as I thought they had huge backlogs. Then suddenly on August 27th I get an email stating that its done and its on its way back!

And I just got it yesterday! Talk about a super fast turnaround! Thanks Soundsmith!

So now is the time to send your cartridge in!

I had the same thing happen. I sent in a Grado Sonata and the note said backlog was 10-12 weeks, but it was completed in less than a month. I expect to receive it Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

That's great to hear. I've been enjoying my Soundsmith cartridge for a few months now, really fantastic sound and exceptional tracking (along par with the Shure v15). I read on Vinyl Asylum that Peter is planning to retire, I hope he has someone that continues to retip, rebuild and build his original designs.

I guess it should come as no surprise that at some point Peter would choose to retire, but as someone who has invested for the long term in a Hyperion (or Strain Gage), I sure hope someone there carries the torch forward. It's a very capable shop all the way around so I'm not too concerned. Perhaps just the innovation would slow down some.

In a presentation he gave at a hifi show (a very informative one about cartridge design) he said he is looking for a younger employee to continue on with his work.
