Define better? I just heard 1.7's for the first time, and I thought they where too forward.... at first I thought they where too thin, this was with the bass panel, then disconnected the bass panel, they I was surprised how well it did the bass..... They seem like they are revealing, not sure what is going on. But it sure doesn't sound "warm", that is for sure... cold is what I would call it.... Maybe tubes would have helped (this was with SS amps)...

"Better speakers" would have been posted much earlier at many sites. No harm done with the above post. Even when on the receiving side we all enjoy a little gibe once in a while.

To my ears when fed a quality signal the 1.7's are superb. Mine do well at reproducing exactly what I have on the menu.

I'm not complaining about the speaker's performance. The weak link in the chain is the crappy stuff on the menu. The 1.7's don't season the output, they just put it on the plate as is.

I likely did Maggies a mis-service posting my thoughts in the planar forum, as I don't fault the speakers.

I've been using a pair of Def Tech SM 450's the last few days. They are definitely fine examples of a very affordable mainstream speaker. I know it's not a fair comparison, but these little speakers hold their own. They're more forgiving to old Allman Brothers and the like. They suffer the same ills any decent speaker does when fed more modern over the top loudness/compression produced stuff.

There's no such thing as a free lunch, as impressive as the diminutive DT's are when both are fed a good signal they simply can't compete with the planars in detail, imaging, etc.

I don't see myself relaxing with what I have now. I'm eyeing tubes, turntables, and praying sanity will return to the recording industry. CD

I think you're on the right path with tubes and vinyl.
I don't know about cold or forward as they're going to give you back whatever it is you put into them.
The Allman Brothers on 180gm vinyl sounds REALLY good through 1.7s. 
They're playing this weekend in the Poconos but I found out too late to make it.
Next year!

"Better" to me would be more realistic / transparent and revealing of the original track and more musical.  I honestly haven't heard many more speakers that do a substantially better job on those front's vs a 1.7, and particularly not at their price new or used.  The 1.7's do need to be supplemented with good quality sub-amplification to achieve a seamless full range.  There are some who don't listen to much music with sub 45-40hz information and are perfectly as-is.

Not sure what you meant by "disconnect the bass panel" : this is not an easy user selectable option that I'm aware of.  And even if you could, disconnect the bass / mid-range panel, I'm not sure anyone would want to listen to just the tweeter & super tweeter HF section......

The 1.7's can get "analytical" compared to many typical box speakers, which is why many choose to add a tube or more somewhere in the signal chain to add a bit more "humanity" to the equation.

I was referring to the DWM panel, used with the 3.7's in the demo....
