How old is your GT? I think you may be surprised how far they've come now with 29ers and improved geometries.
If you're happy with your GT for off-road and general purpose riding, personally I think you'd be better off getting a purpose-built road bike rather than another multi-purpose bike. Sorry, I'm just not a huge fan of hybrids. I understand their intention, but they tend to be expensive considering the so-so component sets included on all but the most expensive hybrids. When you're in that price bracket, you start noticing how nice of a road bike or Mtn bike (with better components) could be had for the same price, if not less.
It sounds like you ride mostly on streets, so get a bike made for that purpose. You'll appreciate the comfort and efficiency it was built for. You still have your GT for everything else (light trails etc).
