And what can I say about Allison that you can't hear and see for yourself? Except what is the one thing that can make the perfect woman even more perfecter? You are correct sirrr... Give that man in the corner a cookie. And that's, that she has a sister that can sing even better and is a bit of a hot mess. And that would be none other than Shelby Lynn. Here's older sis Shelby looking all trashy/sexy, singing like a Honkey Tonk Angel and making Sheryl Crow look like a schoolmarm. Me thinks Sheryl brought a knife to a gun fight.

You could spend a month of Sunday nights Youtubing Allsion and Shelby. Both of them can find depth in the lyrics of songs that is absolutely haunting. I won't go into the details of their childhood but let me just say they have some real history to draw from. If inquiring minds want to know... Google is your friend.

I think Beth Nielsen Chapman is pretty amazing. I recorded her in concert a couple of weeks ago and this song (Sand and Water) brought tears as I was mixing it.
The background is that she had just lost her husband a short while before writing the song and was faced with bringing up her young son alone:

Rhiannon Giddens is another American woman you should get to know. She's a member of Carolina Chocolate Drops. I saw her live not long ago and was awestruck by the power and quality of her voice.

I absolutely love Shelby Lynn on so many levels. She really deserves her own thread. Most audiophile know her by her album "Just a Little Lovin" where she covers Dusty Springfield, but this girl can go deep into any catalog. She not only has the skills to sing soul, blues, jazz and obviously country but I have never not been completely taken into every song she sings. If the song is happy and joyful I'm happy and if it's dark, I feel her pain. I'm in her world when she sings. Very, very rare among artists.

Here's case and point. Here she is looking all old and decrepit (see above thread) at Daryls' House. I love Darly's House because it always sounds so good, the band is so tight and they just do a great job with the arrangements. And by the way I think she wrote a couple of these songs.

Excellent choice DD!

Been loving Rory a long time. I really doubt there is a better acoustic blues (woman) player alive. And her voice is terrific as well.
As good as her recordings are, seeing her live is like a blues spiritual enlightenment. Amazing, magical performer.
