Just completed my first triathlon!!

Just completed my first triathlon!!

After months of training and dealing with injuries, I completed my first triathlon this morning!   :thumb:

This was a Sprint distance with a small twist...a much longer run than usual.    :bawl:

The swim was .5 miles, the bike 15 miles, and the run was 5 miles (instead of the usual 5k). 

The longer run distance + very hot temperature, really took a lot out of me and my run time suffered.  While I was ahead of my projected swim time and spot on with the bike, I was almost 3 minutes/mile slower on the run than I was targeting.

I took my time at each transition and ultimately ended up with a 2:23 total time.  While this had me towards to the back of the pack (83rd out of 115 or so) I really didn't care. 

My goal today was to finish the race and enjoy the experience...which I did!!   :green:

Now to rest up for a bit and drink a well earned beer or two.   :beer:

That's fantastic George! Kudos. All you've got is your health in the end, and it's nice to see you taking care of it!

Thanks guys.

Over the last 10 months I have dropped 40 pounds, 5 inches on my waist, and have myself in the best shape I have been in for the last 15 years.

When I first started exercising and eating better, I never thought I would compete in a triathlon...now I am looking forward to doing more.  Maybe next year I will move up to the Olympic distance (which is basically double the Sprint distances).

Very exciting!  I was able to pass somebody about 20 yards from the finish (can't totally eliminate my competitive juices), which gave me a little extra satisfaction. 

Only disappointment was that my wife and kids weren't at the finish line due to summer baseball tryouts.  They should be there for my next race in two weeks.

Wow George, I'm really impressed. Swimming 1/2 mile alone is impressive enough to me. Good for you getting in shape.

We had a triathlon in Danbury this weekend and people were dropping like flies with the heat. The ED was packed but luckily no one had any life threatening injuries.

CONGRATULATIONS! God bless you and job well done. I would not worry about a time. You fought through injuries and did it! First things first. I'd like to do a half marathon this summer or fall, if my running schedule stays on track. Thanks for the inspiration!
BTW I missed the weight loss part on the first read. I work in health care, I guess you already know what a positive change you have made. It could be one of most important in your life. I tip my hat to you, once again.

My second triathlon is in the books and this one was even better!! :thumb:

The weather was almost perfect (low 70's, low humidity).  My brother-in-law and neighbor competed with me.  And most importantly, I had my wife and two boys there to root me on.

I completed the swim almost 4 minutes faster than two weeks ago and shaved a one minute per mile on my run. 

Overall, I am really happy with the results and look forward to my next race.

Hi George,

We don't personally know each other but i just wanted to say how awesome this is!

Some things are very tough to accomplish in life but when you finish, all the effort was well worth it.
