Tube Audio Design Hibachi II Monoblocks

Hey doods.

Just received my new amps in the mail, which I bought from an ACer. I wanted more headroom than I was getting with my Acurus DIA-100, and I wanted solid state monoblocks. So I came across these, price was right, and voila. They are 180 watts into 8 ohms, 210 watts into 4 ohms, my speakers are 6 ohms, so I guess I'm getting near 200 watts per channel. Adjustable gain, 2 ins, 2 outs.

Unboxed and set them up today, bypassed my Peachtree Audio Decco that I've been using as preamp (tube/ss hybrid), and instead am configured Mac Mini (JRiver & Spotify) into DSPeaker Dual Core Anti Mode 2.0 DAC/processor straight into the Hibachis. So far, they have a much quieter noise floor than the Acurus, and the sound is really smooth and nice. But I'm listening pretty low volume tonight, I'll be able to really listen at 'reference' volumes (and a bit louder  :icon_twisted:) tomorrow during the day. Psyched!

One cool thing: RCA line level outputs, for adding subs!  :D

Also, they're really cool looking amps, with a high gloss finish. Here are some photos.

I have a pair of them boxed up with only a few hours on them, I bought them new from the owner of Tube Audio Design who was my friend Paul Grzybek RIP. they sounded clean and they are pretty to look at.

Well, I am OFFICIALLY CRANKING my system with the new Hibachi amps. Discovered a new jazz album that I'm digging, so I threw that on. VERY well recorded, amazing playing, some of the best and fastest upright bass playing (Bromberg) I've ever heard!:

Brian Bromberg - Downright Upright

Listen here: http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/Downright+Upright/3953471

The amps sound really good... transients retain their full dynamics at high volume to a much greater extent than my previous amp, which had a tendency to start to sound a bit flat and compressed at these SPLs.

My big thing is how cymbals sound, whether they distort and compress at volume. On one of my more dynamic test tracks, XTC's 'The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead', the Hibachis are really reproducing them super well, they stay nuanced and pretty when cranked.  :thumb:. This track can be aggressive at high volume, but this is good as I've heard it.

Listening to a sax solo on the Bromberg album, the midrange is lush yet defined, not at all mushy, but richer than my Acurus. On another test track, 'Let Me Touch You For A While', Alison Krause's vocals are more immediate than I'm used to, a very holographic presentation.

Bass is taken care of by the 300 watt plate amps in my SAM1s, so that's always good .

Overall, combined with my speakers in this room, the TAD Hibachi IIs are making rich, well defined, involving music, and are, right from the get-go, a MAJOR step up in amplification for my system.

I remember when Paul came out with those after the earthquake in China destroyed the factory the TAD 100's and 60's were made in.  Glad your enjoying the amps.  On a side note do you happen to know the reason for Paul's passing? - Sickness, accident  He was a pretty young guy and I got to know him as well over the years

Don't know much about the company, that's pretty sad about the designer.

Listening at reference levels today, man, it makes such a difference to have more headroom. These amps are beasts. Heat sinks sre getting pretty warm  :D
