I have volume control on my L4 so it's my preamp. I'm thinking about getting a new amp and reading about matching input or output impedance to make sure you can use the dac/pre and the optimal volume.  Anyone have any ideas of general guidelines to follow or is this something i don't need to worry about?

What are your speakers and their specs?

The LampizatOr amps (GM70/211) are an obvious solution if you have the efficiency and a reasonable impedance curve.

How do the Tungsram ecc40's sound relative to the stock Mullards?

Not had a chance to discern that yet as I plugged them a couple days before taking off on Vacay.

Will do so in Jan.

However, it reputed that they are more robust and have a smoother midrange than the Mullards. I think I heard that the bass is tighter too.

Fred, Yes they are the obvious choice.  Maybe i should look at those.  My speakers are Salk SS8's that are 87db. I currently have W4S sx1000, and thinking about some  Pass something. I know nothing about the impedance stuff.

Hi guys,

I'm a L4 G4 owner from Europe. I just wanted to let you know that I've replaced my stock Mullard CV 3884 with nos Philips ecc40 (white labels) and even if some say that they are made at the same factory, to my ears the Philips ecc40 sounds better (better clarity,  the instruments have more body and harmonics to name a few).  I've also replaced the stock RCA 6x5 with a Tung-Sol and I can confirm the findings of others... the Tung-Sol is the better tube.

Hope this helps,

   Doru

Dear owners of Lampizators,
Does your Lampis also do a little or slightly bigger than little noise when your pre are turn to maximum value?

My Lampi has been ruled out as the tube rush culprit.  That noise comes through the preamp tubes.  So my Lampi is noise-free.

And how about rectifier tube? Did you repace them ? Mine is OTK- Russian. And I'm thinking about some upgrade. What is your experience in this domain?

Definitely upgrade both tube types as stated in this thread.  Then get an upgraded fuse.  Big help as well.

What's a good fuse and size for the L4G4?

It takes a 1.25A.  I bought a HiFi Tuning fuse, small gold fast blow for $20 from Revolution Power.  Had a sale in December.  Priority mail.  Total was $26.49 then.  Not sure today's price.

I was slightly skeptical and didn't want to go for the $75+ fuses but now that I have it and it seems to add to the sound.....I'm glad I did grab it.

The Create Audio fuses sell for about $10 shipped on ebay and are a nice upgrade to the stock fuses for very little commitment.

If you are a fuse skeptic, this is a safe/low risk place to start.

Are they safe in terms of actually working like a fuse should?  That's the real issue with these...what type of certifications do they have to make sure they actually work if/when needed?

Consider all of you warned!

My L4G4 came with 3.15a fuses.......  Perhaps because it is balanced?

I'm using my L4 with volume control but if i wanted to add a separate pre is there a way to defeat the preamp function?

Just turn the volume all the way up, and hook it up to a pre like any other Dac

Just turn the volume all the way up, and hook it up to a pre like any other Dac

then i guess the signal will be going through 2 preamps? doesn't seem like the most efficient way.  Hmmmm
