Upcoming Tube Amp Purchase
« on: 13 Apr 2013, 07:48 pm »
Good day all.  With a budget of approx $300 I'll be adding an 2-C amp soon to augment my 1978 Pioneer SX-850 SS receiver.  Up for consideration so far:

MENG YAYI Series 6P1 and the Musical Paradise MP-301 MK3.

Have not come across much info re the Meng and therefore would like some basic feedback on the model if possible (performance/reliability) and of course whether this may be good competition with the MP unit.  Just hate having quality issues with items bought direct over the internet (especially from China).    A potential sacrifice I suppose to save a few bucks.

Those seem to both be integrateds.  Why augment, why not replace?

For what it's worth, I've heard of the Musical Paradise and I haven't heard of the Meng.

Presumably you have some pretty efficient speakers.  The MP-301 is only 6 watts and the 6P1 is 15 watts.

Speakers are a pair of Axiom M2V3 (90 dB in room, 86 dB anechoic).  Integrated is fine,  wanting that tube sound and these two units seem to be what I'm looking for.

If you have not pulled the trigger, look for a Jolida 302b.  Solid Integrated performer.

I don't think 6 watts will give you the headroom you want on 90 db efficient speakers.  Even 15 watts will be, in my opinion, challenging.  Although I don't know how big your room is and at what db you generally listen at.

My Zu Superflys are 101 db efficient, and most people think 6 watts is not enough, and personally I found 15 watts a bit anemic.  Having said that, it can be a bit of a mixed bag here and doesn't all come down to watts.  For example, while a 15 watt push pull I once had didn't have a handle on the bass, a different 8 watt 300B SET I had saw no problems at all.

I suspect this had more to do with the stoutness of the power supplies.  Hard to believe that the Meng or the Musical Paradise are overbuilt in this way.

But the truth is I have no idea because I have no experience with your speakers.  If you could, I'd spend more money and buy a bit more headroom.  There's a user Jolida JD102CRC with a $600 asking price on Audiogon right now.  It's specd at 20 watts which I think is more appropriate.

There's also a 38 wpc Onix SP3 there with a $500 asking price.

Seems there is a member on the AC headphone forum that own a MusicalParadise just like it.

I'm kinda agreeing here...spending that extra appears to be a huge improvement.  I have looked at that Jolida on Audiogon and it's super nice.  I do have a pair of Axiom M22V3 that I can relocate to the space, much better at 93 dB efficient in room.

The Jolida people in Maryland have always been good to deal with which I think should count for something.

I've placed my order for the Musical Paradise MP-301 MK3.  It's within my budget and (as a SET amp) should drive the Axiom M2V3 just fine in my space.   The Jolida's look enticing but I am not an advocate of used gear, at least not today.  Vendor however is out of stock until mid may...that's not too long to wait.
