Audio Folk and Shops in New England

Friends,

Haven't posted in a long time, although I've been a religious reader. Some few of you know that I used to work with Nathan and Bill at Eighth Nerve, but I left to teach voice at a local university last year.

My wife and I are moving to NH soon. I wonder who at the Circle lives in northern New England and can suggest local manufacturers, shops, and/or audio groups? I know of the Boston folks from recent AA threads, but I wonder what else may be around.

Looking forward to my future life as musician, teacher, and recreational audiophool back in the northeast.

There's another high-end store in North Hampton (Seacoast) on RT 1, but I can't remember the name. Perhaps there's some stores in the Hanover/Lebanon area further north near the VT border - Dartmouth College is up there.

Good luck with your move. Please remember not to be shocked by the property taxes in your community, which is the primary source for local school funding; however, there's no state nor sales tax here. Feel free to drop me a line when you get settled.

State Street Discount, and Ensemble http://www.ensembleav.com/ That should be a decent start. As for taxes, house prices, and overall cost of living, yes it is quite high here in NE.

Thanks for the links and ideas. It seems there will be no shortage of places to listen and hear new gear.

How about CD and Vinyl shopping? Any good used or underground places you'd speak to?

This may be jumping the gun, but I'd be happy to host an event in the fall to get some folks from this region together (if there's interest).

I'd love to attend any audio events in the New England area, so count me in! We need a New England Circle here

I live in MA (near Worcester). If you ever head into Boston, you can check out Spearit Sound on Comm Ave., and there is a place in Cambridge called The Audio Lab.

I've been doing some tweaking and repairs for people, so feel free to email me if you need a hand.

Vinnie R, I don't know if we scrape together enough people to form a NE Circle, but I do like the idea

. In the past I have tried to get a group to go a local hifi shop but I could not get the group to decide on a time. I guess we get too wrapped up in everyday events up here.

Off topic but are you the famous or shall I say infamous author of the Vinnie mods for the Toshiba 3950/3960? I'm toying with the idea of picking one of them up. I starting to assemble the tools and materials needed to do some DIY work. I'm putting an order together from takefiveaudio.com if you need anything let me know

I really liked this place. It think he sold Linn's and Thiel's mainly but the owner or co-owner was an easy guy to deal with/talk to. This was my favorite shop in the Boston area.

If you start a club, Kris could really help people setup their systems...

He knows his stuff!

Yes, I am the 3950/3960 Vinnie who did those mods.

Because this thread is somewhat of a poll on interest in a NE circle, I'd say I have some interest. I live in Mansfield, MA about 30 miles south of Boston.

I'm a novice, but it would be great to meet some local people that could help with repairs/set-up changes, recommendations etc........

Try Pitchfork Records on Main St. in Concord. However, I think the owner got slapped with a royalty suit last year re: bootlegs.

Also try Newbury Comics for used CDs, various locations including South Willow Drive in Manchester, NH. However, I have found the prices are not very discounted for used CDs; sometimes BestBuy has it new for the same or lower price. However, Newbury do have lots of interesting product.

One place and a group that I would definately check out if I lived up there would be:

1) Amherst Audio, Amherst, MA owned by Bob Neill
lines: Elrod, TG Audio, Audio Note, Blue Circle, JM Reynaud, Audience

2) NE Bottlehead's, you can track them or find their members on the AA Bottlehead forum. One of their usual members is David Cope who is the US Distributor for Audio Note UK.
