Bunches of 1.7s and 1.6s on Audiogon this week
« on: 3 Apr 2013, 09:51 pm »
Don't know why the flurry of stuff.....have also seen a couple of 3.7s out there in the past 3 weeks. Who says you can't get hi-end speakers for under $2K?

Magnepan's may be the best value in the audio world.

There really are quite a lot, many right around my neck of the woods.
I wonder how many are getting 3.7s?

There's a clean looking pair of 3.5's on a'Gon for under 2g.....less that what it costs to get mmg's modded....

still wouldn't be as good for small to med rooms. Stock crossover, and not anything special to look at. When I go big on big room speakers it'll be something nicer than 3's anyway and I'll still have the beautiful 'stands for small room or bedroom.

If I was starting over I still wouldn't pick 3's over Magnestands. Wouldn't change a thing.

Reza, my post had nothing to do with you....not much nicer than 3's, unless you go for 20's!

Somebody should jump on those 1.7s for $1300 or whatever it is.
That's a steal.
You can buy the shipping boxes from Magnepan if need be.

Yup that's what I meant. Not necessarily 20's, something in that class. Maybe 3 or 4 years. Need a bigger place first. I barely have room for mmg's as it is.

Just be careful buying used maggies.   I know a few people that have bought 1.6's only to find that they have the bass buzz from the wires coming loose and they having to fix it themselves or send them it and have them glued back down for over $300.  My over 10yr old MMG's are starting to have a bass rattle.   Magnepan wants about $300 to refurbish the pair.  I paid $550 for them.

Magnepan changed the way they glue down the aluminum wires about 10 years or so ago and it isn't a problem anymore, still is for the older ones.   Consider that you can get an older pair for dirt cheap and that Magnepan still supports them and will rebuild/repair them for a reasonable fee is wonderful.   In most cases, the delamination repair can be done at home for less than $20 and a bunch of hours to peel off the socks and all the screws.   I did my 2.5's and had new ribbons sent to me on the ribbon exchange plan and the total cost was around $900.00.   BTW, I had the usual Banana peel at the ends and one place on the tone ring where 4 wires had lifted for about 8".  It wasn't the bass that caused them to squack, it was acoustic guitar passages in the one speaker.

If they start to rattle again, I will evaluate and either do the repair myself or send them for a full rewire and enjoy them for many years to come.  However, I don't think they will delaminate for several years to come.

Am resurrecting this thread re: Six Maggie 1.7s on Audiogon--downward price pressure on the used market and a great time to buy into the Maggie sound!

Anyone have any thoughts as to why the sudden flood of product on the used market (I get why several 3.6s as there has always been three or four of those listed).

Moving up the chain to larger models, bad economy, perhaps trying different flavors of speaker?

I was wondering if some Maggie lovers were experiencing fatigue with the new sound after owning their 1.7s?

One of the things I've come to realize from scanning this forum is how personal folks take their sound preferences. May seem obvious to some of you, but I came back to this hobby a couple of years ago after having been absent for about 20 years (darn kids.....).

Back in the 1970s when I worked in a stereo service department in Ann Arbor MI (HI-FI-Buys) there were far fewer technology choices in the loudspeaker category. Now you have to choose between planer, electrostatic, box, active, passive, hybrids, etc.. and then decide what kind of tweeter you love.  :P

Don't know where to post this but since I mentioned Hi-Fi Buys in Ann Arbor thought I'd share this old ad from back in the day http://oldnews.aadl.org/node/198091 :D  Love what $598 could buy you back then (and the claim that the Advent hangs with the most expensive of them.....)...

Speaking of current items on Audiogon, this system would sound really nice for someone out in California:

http://app.audiogon.com/listings/planars-magnepan-surround-set-up-1-7-cc5-mmg-2013-05-14-speakers-92264-palm-springs-ca

For listener fatigue, I think I know what you mean.
The new speakers are so revealing that if the source is bright, harsh or grainy that's what you'll get right back at you.
My Sonic Frontiers preamp tried to clear out the earwax when matched up with 20.7s but it works well with the 1.7s.
Matching and modifying components has really become important to get the sound you're after.

The Maggies are definitely unique sounding.  They sound almost lifelike in some aspects, and can sound a bit rough around the edges in others.  Although my better half was not happy with their looks, their overall sound left me in a bit of a quandary.   I loved some aspects of what they did, but was not happy with other aspects.  The treble with Maggies is a real pleasure, but the lower midrange and bass left me not so impressed.  Reading the reviews of the 1.7's, the measurements do show high distortion levels at 50 Hz.   I think that bothered me during moderate volume level listening sessions.

So, while I'm not sure I gave the Maggies enough time, the speakers I've auditioned since I sold the Maggies have confirmed for me that a monitor/sub setup gets me closer to where I want to go.  The most recent version of the Tyler Reference Monitors can provide a most enjoyable musical experience with a quality sub.  The ultimate monitor I've heard of late is the ATC SCM 19's.  The accuracy, overall clarity, and soundstage is second to none.

So, while I think Maggies are a high quality set of speakers, they are not for everyone.  For those that love them, they can provide immense musical enjoyment.

They do take quite a while to break in, there's no denying that.
It was probably the better part of a month before my 1.7s started sounding they way they should.
It was so odd when it happened as the soundstage lifted UP in the middle of a song - I was just lucky enough to be sitting in front of them when it happened.

Hey, go with what you like! Anything else is just plain foolish. Speakers, more than any other component, define one's system. I'm glad to hear that you found something you like better - for whatever reason. However, I must ask a question (and please pardon my aging memory). Did you try the 1.7s in a monitor/sub setup? I mean no more insult to Magnepan than you, but I wouldn't have mine any other way. Without the subs, I have a hard time enjoying either the MMGs or the 3.7s (or the 3.6s that I had for a while). I've never heard the bigger Maggies. With the subs properly integrated, which is a pain to nail down (satisfactorily) and requires program related fiddling, I suffer no fatigue - just pure, unadulterated, enjoyment.  :D
