There really are quite a lot, many right around my neck of the woods.I wonder how many are getting 3.7s?
There's a clean looking pair of 3.5's on a'Gon for under 2g.....less that what it costs to get mmg's modded....Jim
still wouldn't be as good for small to med rooms. Stock crossover, and not anything special to look at. When I go big on big room speakers it'll be something nicer than 3's anyway and I'll still have the beautiful 'stands for small room or bedroom. If I was starting over I still wouldn't pick 3's over Magnestands. Wouldn't change a thing.
Reza, my post had nothing to do with you....not much nicer than 3's, unless you go for 20's!Jim
Just be careful buying used maggies. I know a few people that have bought 1.6's only to find that they have the bass buzz from the wires coming loose and they having to fix it themselves or send them it and have them glued back down for over $300. My over 10yr old MMG's are starting to have a bass rattle. Magnepan wants about $300 to refurbish the pair. I paid $550 for them.
Moving up the chain to larger models, bad economy, perhaps trying different flavors of speaker?
I was wondering if some Maggie lovers were experiencing fatigue with the new sound after owning their 1.7s? One of the things I've come to realize from scanning this forum is how personal folks take their sound preferences. May seem obvious to some of you, but I came back to this hobby a couple of years ago after having been absent for about 20 years (darn kids.....).Back in the 1970s when I worked in a stereo service department in Ann Arbor MI (HI-FI-Buys) there were far fewer technology choices in the loudspeaker category. Now you have to choose between planer, electrostatic, box, active, passive, hybrids, etc.. and then decide what kind of tweeter you love.
Speaking of current items on Audiogon, this system would sound really nice for someone out in California:http://app.audiogon.com/listings/planars-magnepan-surround-set-up-1-7-cc5-mmg-2013-05-14-speakers-92264-palm-springs-caFor listener fatigue, I think I know what you mean. The new speakers are so revealing that if the source is bright, harsh or grainy that's what you'll get right back at you. My Sonic Frontiers preamp tried to clear out the earwax when matched up with 20.7s but it works well with the 1.7s. Matching and modifying components has really become important to get the sound you're after.
So, while I'm not sure I gave the Maggies enough time, the speakers I've auditioned since I sold the Maggies have confirmed for me that a monitor/sub setup gets me closer to where I want to go.
