I'm enjoying One Hundred Years of Solitude based on the book of the same title by Gabriel García Márquez . I read "Love in the Time of Cholera" years ago but never got around to reading his other novels.

That's on my list, for some reason I haven't gotten around to it yet.  Many years ago my roommate was reading it and I always intended to pick it up, but life got in the way.

American Primeval is the most authentic, grittiest, meanest, bloodthirsty, gripping, and fascinating western since 2015's "The Revenant." I watched all 6 episodes non-stop, my advise is to set aside a 6 hour block of time because you will be transported to Utah in 1857 and won't want to leave.

American Primeval was written by Mark L. Smith, he and Alejandro G. Iñárritu wrote the revenge saga “The Revenant,” the brutality is similar.

The story follows Taylor Kitsch as a mountain man guiding a mother and son, played by Betty Gilpin and Preston Mota through the unsettled Utah wilderness surrounded by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints formed militias, the US Army, very pissed-off Indians and murderous bounty hunters, all trying to claim Utah for their own and not hesitating to kill anyone who stands in their way. The action is put in motion by the real-life Mountain Meadows Massacre, in which church militia members slaughtered some 120 members of an emigrant wagon train.

Rated R for scalpings, rapes, massacres, animal carcasses which are hung, skinned, drained and boiled, arrows, hatchets and guns.

Zero Day on Netflix.  Holy mackerel what a series!  I binged it all in one sitting today, I couldn't turn it off.  Possibly Robert DeNiro's best performance ever.  An edge of your seat thriller with a zillion twists.  I won't say much to avoid any spoilers, but everyone knows from the previews that an attack on America that causes mass casualties is being investigated by a former president who is given extra legal powers.  It's so much more, a very personal story with flawed people who have complex motivations.  Highly recommend, but allow some time to watch, it's hard to turn off.

Gotta disagree.  To me a big MEH.  Found it a bit goofy and plodding.  Didn't feel much tension or suspense.  :dunno:

Lukewarm reception by both critics and regular folks alike.

Yes, appears to be very mixed reviews with half the viewers echoing my comments and the other half echoing yours, almost verbatim.  We can't discuss what I think may be the reason for this on these pages.

Wild Wild Country.  Started watching at 11pm and couldn't stop until 4 am.  Fascinating look at a cult trying to take over the local government in the US.

Just finished "Norman's Rare Guitars". A documentary on the iconic Los Angeles vintage guitar shop and its founder/owner. Highly recommended.

The Electric State with Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown on Netflix.  This is not a great movie, no Oscar winning roles here, but an utterly delightful romp.  The silly robots are more human than most of the humans in the movie and it's easy to root for them, especially Mr Peanut.  Like most oppressed people the robots just want to be left alone to live free and happy, which is the theme of the movie.  Recommend as a guilty pleasure movie, it's just fun.

Long Bright River on Peacock.  A gritty police drama set in Philadelphia and filmed mostly on the streets of the Kensington neighborhood that I know intimately.  The major intesection of Front and Garrard figures prominently as well as many of the other side streets all underneath the El, the elevated commuter train that runs above Front Street.  The area portrayed was like this in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, but has now gentrified with restaurants and clubs along the streets and townhouses that sold for $14,000 a few years ago now updated and going for $3-400,000 with millennials strolling up and down streets that nobody that wasn't a gangster or hooker would a few years ago.  The series is full of confusing plot twists with a powerful family dynamic focused on a time when I worked and spent time in that area.

A music movie that's not a musical, on Peacock not Netflix, but still streaming.  Becks.  About a singer songwriter with her life in turmoil as she moves back in with her mom in her old house and teenage room back in her hometown.  And the music is just fabulous if you love female vocalists like I do.  Be warned there's very sexual topics with a very sexual scene if you have young kids in the house.  Recommended, especially for Audio Circle.

I'm with you bkatbamna - while there's something to be said for authenticity - for presenting history with no sugar coating, I'm not sure what is to be gained by watching rapes, scalping and other forms of brutality - and I'm a little suspicious of what motivates those who want to watch it.

Adolescence is a 4-part British crime drama mini-series that follows the arrest of a 13 year old boy. The drama is intense because each episode was shot in one continuous take.

Adolescence is noted for its extensive use of one-shot filming, as each episode is shot in one take. Shooting was planned through multiple rehearsals building up to full technical run-throughs, during which the director of photography would plan camera movements. Each one-hour episode was shot around 10 times, with two takes per day. Episodes were shown as completed in one take, with no cuts or blending of shots together with CGI. Graham said that each episode took three weeks in total. The takes used were as follows: first episode, 2nd take; second episode, 13th take; third episode, 12th take; fourth episode, 16th take. The series' four episodes were not shot in chronological order: Cooper's first day on set was shooting episode 3.

The only other single episode in a series that comes close to matching the drama and intensity of Adolescence is "Three Men and Adena" from season 1, episode 5 of "Homicide: Life on the Street" that featured Kyle Secor and Andre Braugher interviewing Risley Tucker (Moses Gunn) in the "box" with only 12 hours to elicit a confession. Streaming on Peacock. Very highly recommended.

Is this a docu-drama, or horror? Current events?

American Primeval, one of Netflix better productions. A lot of their recent stuff has been poor, with dialog seemingly created by AI.
