Just finished season one of The Diplomat.  Absolutely brilliant, I was up until 1:30 am finishing it last night and my bedtime is usually 9 or 10.  A Kerri Russell vehicle she's superb here as a career front line state department expert who gets derailed from her anticipated flight to Kabul to complete her mission there to being appointed as ambassador to Great Britain.  (Not a spoiler, that's the first three minutes) The series hits the ground running, no long and boring build up explaining everything, you just have to keep up.  If you liked West Wing or House of Cards this is better.  The end of season cliff hanger is shattering and completely unexpected, but makes perfect sense.  Russell is brilliant as a smart, experienced, brutally capable professional completely over her head.  A second season is promised.

Thanks for mentioning the Diplomat. Perfect for me, right up my alley. Not a TV person but this series got me on the couch.

if you like the Diplomat, try "The Bureau" on Sundance channel, a truly excellent show with all 5 seasons being well above par.

another great one i watched recently is "Halt and Catch Fire."

cheers

Another fun one:  Brooklyn 99

Personally, I find a lot of Neflix stuff to be too violent.  Tried to watch The Magicians.  Made it to the end of the first show, where it got too violent for me.  Stopped watching it.

I went old school recently and went back to 2013 for House of Cards, one I'd missed back in the day for various reasons.  Remarkably undated despite the ridiculous political stances, but if you can ignore one party advancing the other's policy in real life the drama holds up.  And the real life drama of the lead actor getting cancelled made for a surprisingly impactful final season.  I thought it would be a incoherent mop up, but it was one of the better seasons of the show.  Recommended if you don't mind seeing everyone using BlackBerrys in the first season.

It's Only Life After All

A documentary about my favorite group of all time, beyond and above all others, the one that hits straight to the heart both musically and spiritually, The Indigo Girls.  Amy Ray and Emily Sayers have been friends since elementary school are now older women who've gone through a lot and are still together as a musical and activist team.  For me the whole program was quite emotional having seen them many times over the years in so many different venues from huge concert venues to intimate gatherings.  I hope that those of you who watch it enjoy the music and find inspiration from these beautiful people.

Black Doves.  A fabulous 6 episode series that seems longer because, well, I haven't really decided why it seems not short, but it does.  Maybe because each episode is so jam packed with content.  Very British and full of spies and assassins and murders and political intrigue from the lowest crime levels to the seats of power, it's also remarkably touching and heartfelt examining the different levels of love and devotion, all wrapped around the Christmas season.  Did I say it was packed full of content?  A second season is planned with the back story articles saying the scripts were altered to save a couple of key characters that the show runners decided they liked too much to kill off, just yet.  Highly recommend as, very surprisingly, a Christmas series.

OK, as someone with a casual curiosity about the Indigo Girls, I'll put that on my list. Thanks for the heads-up.

I'm currently in to Season 2 of Loudermilk, and enjoying it much more than I thought I would.

One that's not on Netflix but is a must-see is "Leonardo Davinci" on PBS.  His mind was one of the most brilliant in the history of mankind, certainly centuries ahead of his time, and the documentary does a very good job of portraying that.  It also provides the historical context that folks who are unschooled in that period of time (folks like me) might find enlightening (I did).  I don't think that anybody who checks the show out will be disappointed.

I have something wonderful for you all.  It's a short little documentary, only 38 minutes, called "The Only Girl in the Orchestra".  It's the story of Orin O'Brien, the first woman in the all male New York Philharmonic.  That was 1966 and now she's retiring, and moving, while her only living relative, a niece, films it all.  And it's brilliant.  Touching, surprising, heartfelt, so very well done.  I won't give any more away and spoil the surprises, just watch it.

I concur on "Only Girl in the Orchestra" and will add "Alias Grace" as a really well done adaptation of a novel.
