As others have mentioned, I'd first start with the "led or plasma" question.  Once figured out, then proceed.

If you have a Costco handy, they usually have some pretty good prices.

Last week I saw a 64" Samsung plasma for $1,250, and a 55" Panasonic plasma for $700(higher ut model too).

Don't go for plasma TVs as their panels are reflective - no good at all for bright areas. Only good for basement where no sunshine comes in.

My suggestion is: Sharp 60LE640 60" LED 120Hz for only USD1.099 now on sale at Best Buy stores.
LED Tv panels are not reflective & very energy saving.

Best bang for the buck.

Unless you've got kids that like to poke things. Plasmas have glass screens, Everything else has "squishy" screens like most PC monitors.
Go ahead, poke your monitor with something sharp. I dare ya.   :P
