It's hard to imagine bettering the price/performance of my beloved original CS2's, but at that price, wow :thumb:

They really do look great and best of luck with them!

The Trilogy is not omni in any sense, except in the Bass region where wavelengths are longer. It has a narrower and more consistent pattern than typical audiophile speakers. It is important to maintain the same dispersion angle across the spectrum from the midrange and up in order to create a situation where the frequency response shape reflecting off the room boundaries is similar to the response coming directly from the speaker. Meaning, that your brain does not want to sum different responses between the direct field and reflected field. Narrower dispersion reduces room interaction and allows more nearly a "near-field" listening experience. Fortunately, Duke has been promoting the importance of this for many years.

Most home audiophile speakers have a dispersion pattern that is too wide and not at all consistent with frequency. A good example of a correctly designed speaker from this viewpoint would be the TAD Reference 1. The Trilogy meets this criteria as well. Exposed dome and ribbon speakers are usually very room dependent for this reason. Andrew Jones and I both come from the pro industry, where controlled directivity as a technical feature is valued at near the top of the list when developing the design platform. A major reason why an omni speaker, like the MBL can sound so good, is while the room is excited (bad), the consistency of radiated energy per cubic centimeter is very high (good). But then they are highly dependent on good room acoustics.

Therefore, a coaxial design such as we are using is a very good design solution, allowing a point source from 100Hz up along with good pattern control. Obviously, the driver design and system execution will ultimately determine the success of the design, but this is the best known platform, in my view. In the Trilogy, the coaxial unit is also open baffle, affording a very natural reproduction that breathes and has very low coloration.

Regarding the sweet-spot question. The short answer is that a small but optimum point for stereo imaging is just the nature of stereo. The best image focus will usually have the smallest listening spot. Very similar to a photo lens, where a cheap, auto-focus camera is more forgiving than a precision manual adjust lens, but delivers a lower quality result.

This explanation, with its reliance on established research and no-BS approach ("... a small but optimum point for stereo imaging is just the nature of stereo.") bodes very well for this design. If it has been well executed, that is. My current speakers are based on some of the same principals (controlled dispersion, coaxial point source above 200 Hz, sonically matched on/off axis FR)  and it seems to work very well in my listening room. Can't wait to read more and hopefully hear them for myself!

Wow, very interested. Considering a very no BS gear sale to cover $1500  :thumb:

T2 differences from their Audiogon ad:

The T2 upgrades the 12" Eminence midrange used in the T1 to the new much higher performance Emerald Physics 12.1 driver. This custom 12" midrange driver goes down to 100Hz versus 300Hz in the T1. There is therefore no crossover in the critical 100-300Hz range. The T2 also has a far upgraded crossover with better parts throughout. The T2 is also wired with $300.00 worth or Spatial's Quantum speaker cable.

Seems like a nice upgrade for $400.

Anybody hear these yet?

Hello Mr. Shaw,

very nice indeed. I was wondering at what impendance the 97 db is quoted for T1, is it 8 ohms or 4 or better if you have a impendance curve? Also  would you have the frequency range with +/- db? Are there any professional reviews brewing we should look out for reading?

My own DIY speakers are close..... open baffle vintage 15" electro-voice 3 triaxial units (woofer/whizzer/horn) but no extra bass helper. I did have plans for a open baffle woofer right below the EV units but never cut my baffles to implement it. I also don't think my units are as sensitive, maybe 92-94 dB.

Certainly even for a DIYer, I have to see if I can budget this in and stop my garage shop experiments....maybe after selling my units too.

thanks
paba

How far must this speaker be placed from walls?

I can't believe these got past me. Ok, dang, add Spatial to my list for system 2.

Totally. My living room system is screaming out for something like this.

(although not according to my gf, I'm sure)

To my eyes they look pretty WAF compatible though

Tried Spatial's wires and IC's last summer and they make nice stuff.

Definitely high GAF, no doubt. Problem is, she's perfectly happy with the Audioengine P4s + Polk sub we have in there currently, and I can see the  even now...

F* it, speakers are too important to let little things like relationships get in the way.
