I picked up a Kenwood KD-770D some years ago but it was soon replaced by a VPI.
I found it in a used record store for $75

And any tips for our new AC friend? What carts did you like on this table?

I didn't own it for very long when I switched to the the VPI. The only cart I ever installed was a Goldring 1012
and while I was happy with the overall sound, when I switched to the VPI with a Denon DL-103 and I was sold
on MC. I'm now using a Ortofon Kontrapunkt a and for me this is audio magic.

Dang. $75? Still, looks like I got a good value too.  :) And that 770D looks NICE.  :thumb: I can only hope mine looks close to as good as that.

Roscoe - Ok, no Shure scale. I'll get a digital scale. If you can recommend something when you have a minute, that would be great.

BTW, Neobop - thank you for those cartridge suggestions. I'll be looking them up as soon as I can.

Here is what JackD recommended in a different thread. I ordered the second of the two:

*************************
The digital scales are available on Ebay for little money and are no different than the higher price versions sold by the specialty companies. I use one of these and it works fine.  Was less than half this price a year ago.

This one will work fine too and has a larger weighing surface.  I have one of both.  I just put electrical tape down on the platform where the stylus will land.

I'd recommend the top one over the second one, since the thickness of the weighing platform is closest to the width of a record. They can be found cheaper when not labelled as for turntables:

I chose that one because it used AA batteries instead of a watch battery. I also got a 5 g weight for another dollar or so to confirm that the scale is measuring correctly.

+2 on Denon DL 110. I have one as well as a Soundsmith Otello ($300) and the 110 comes very close in performance in my setup.

Roscoe

I use the first one as a stylus gauge and the second one just to measure headshells and cartridges. Actually never sat them side by side to see if one is higher than the other.  Another benefit of the first one is that with some auto tables with electronic stylus pressure like one of my JVC's when the table is powered down there is no VTF and if you try to do it with the power on the platter spins, so you have to set up a platform beside the platter and the second wouldn't fit.

Get the one you want, don't worry about the thickness.  Remove the platter and simply place the scale on something that will give you exact height of the record surface.  Books, cd cases, hockey pucks, blocks of wood.  Anything.  I use a deck of cards, very height adjustable.
