I read the subject line for this thread and thought:  How can a rock be audiophile quality?

I think this guy is brilliant...

Follow that up with an early "Rocker" from him

Then dig deep, the more you listen, the more you'll like him (fair warning, he's bipolar, but bordering on genius, I think).

Hey Diamond Dog, can't believe you didn't just simply recommend "In Absentia" by Porcupine Tree, which you very graciously turned me on to a while back. That album is super well recorded, and there's some great songs on there too. Oh yeah, you also hooked me up with "The Seldom Seen Kid" by Elbow, fantastic sound, great album. Basically DD's got the goods.  :D Recently I've been listening to Ryan Adams, his albums sound really good, and I like his songs (that always helps). Another ACer tipped me off to "Nonesuch" by XTC, great dynamic range on that one.  And for me, Phoenix records amazing sounding albums, "Union", "Alphabetical", and "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" all rock with style and their own signature sleek sound. Go French guys!  Tons of well recorded rock out there, those are just off the top of my head.

Porcupine Tree absolutely knows what they're doing.

Steven Wilson's (PT front man) two albums so far are also recorded beautifully. His first album, Insurgentes is pretty good with some trippy/ experimental sounds (for my taste).

His second album "Grace for Drowning" toned down the experimental nature a touch, but kept the prog rock aspect well alive, great album.

I'm planning on buying his next album, "The Raven That Refused to Sing" on vinyl.  :D

GREAT thread.  The better my system gets, the more ruined some of my old favorites get

But a few stand out (off the top of my head....):

Michael Ruff - "Speaking in Melodies" - this is a 20 year old Sheffield CD and it's spectacular.  Ruff's voice is impossible to record without glare, but they did it.

Some generally well recorded bands/musicians:

Rickie Lee Jones
Steely Dan
Donald Fagen
Gomez
Some Doobie Brothers

I'm really bummed that I can hardly stand to listen to some of my old favorites any more:

Elton John (except Brown Dirt Cowboy still sounds good to me)
Billy Joel
Most Beatles
Stevie Wonder (that's worth a thread in itself, very strange sound on his big '70's era albums)
Chicago
Earth, Wind & Fire
Sly & The Family Stone
Much of Crosby, Stills & Nash
Weather Report
And please don't flame me, but I'm not thrilled with how Pink Floyd is sounding, I thought they'd kill on a good system, but not on mine...

A lot of Pink Floyd for me has some incredibly well recorded stuff but with b+ sonics, but range from Roger Waters amused to death (WOW) recordings to early music Im just starting to love, but not sonically. Big spread

Very true!

Don't forget Steve Wilson's reissues of King Crimson albums. He did a very good job getting near audiophile SQ from those 40 year old masters. Not to mention that the originals on vinyl were pretty damn good sounding to begin with.

Speaking of PT , Steve Wilson and King Crimson, a large percentage of modern progressive music in general is recorded at a much higher level of quality than mainstream rock releases. Among progressive music, you will find very little of that compressed, fatiguing sound of that most modern recording are guilty of.

Some good modern prog that is recorded very well, off the top of my head:

The Flower Kings, Riverside (kind of like a more progressive Porcupine Tree), Cynic (Traced in Air), Opeth (Heritage), Big Big Train, and a bunch more.

Nobody has made good music in 20 years. It all sounds terrible and not worth your time.

The idea that no recent rock music sounds good is nonsense.

Some of these were previously mentioned:
Gov't. Mule - especially the album "Dose"
Metallica - "Black"
Tool - "Aenima"
Chris Duarte - "Texas Sugar Strat Majic"
Eric Clapton - "Blues"

Metallica "Black" was released 22 years ago.   Not exactly resent.

Ronnie James Dio's album 'Lock up the Wolves' is a pretty decent recording.

Radiohead, Bjork, Tool, Ben Harper, Nine Inch Nails, Beck, Wilco, the Flaming Lips - all are modern and all have put out great sounding albums.

"Compression is the soul of rock and roll" - Bob Ludwig

This could be the problem.
