24/192 over hdmi from mac mini?
« on: 21 Nov 2012, 12:43 pm »
I have been sending 24/192 audio over hdmi from an Oppo bdp93 to a Classe SSP-800 with no issues for months. The SSP-800 says it's getting a 24/192 signal.

I hooked up a Mac Mini last night (latest model), and the mac's Audio MIDI setup is only showing a max of 96khz over HDMI

Trying to play a 24/192 album (Norah Jones from HDTracks) froze Audiofile's Fidelia application.

I was under the impression that the Mac Minis can output 24/192 over HDMI. I know the Classe can accept 24/192 over HDMI from the Oppo, so what's going on with the Mac Mini?

What is HDMI?

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface and is an industry standard for connecting high-definition audio and video devices.

Which version of HDMI works with the Mac mini (Mid 2010) and later?

Mac mini is designed to work with HDMI devices that comply with versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.2a, 1.3, 1.3a, and 1.4 of the HDMI specification.

Which resolutions are supported on the Mac mini (Mid 2010) and later?

The HDMI port supports up to 1080p on HDMI connections. With the HDMI to DVI adapter, the HDMI port will work with resolutions up to 1920 x 1200.

Which type of audio works with HDMI?

Apple supports 8 channel 24-bit audio at 192kHz, Dolby Surround 5.1 and stereo output.

What should I do if the Mac mini does not display on the full screen or does not display?

From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences, then choose Displays from the View menu.  Adjust the "Underscan" until the image fills the screen.

Thanks, but that thread doesn't mention HDMI, only optical.

As for your edit which says the mini should send 192 over HDMI, can anyone else actually get this to work?  Like I've said, my Classe can get a 24/192 signal from an Oppo BDP93, so I don't think it's the Classe.  Audio MIDI setup on my mini is only showing a max of 96

What version of OS are you using? I seem to remember reading about a driver issue with 10.8 and some players. Have you checked the Fidelia site to see if they are discussing this problem?

10.8.1 since there is no 10.8.2 update for the new Minis yet

I've tried Fidelia, Decibel and a few more.  Regardless of the app, though, the Audio MIDI setup won't let me choose higher than 96 when I choose HDMI output.

I've posted on the Fidelia board about another issue (multichannel files only play as stereo.  Decibel plays the same files in surround)

24/192 over hdmi works fine from my macbook pro

So it's either the Mini's hardware, or the os version (10.8.2 on the MBP, 10.8.1 on the mini)
