In the December 2012 TAS (#228), the editior, Robert Hartley penned a nice article on the Mercedes Benz "Frontbass" System that mounts 8.6" bass drivers on the front door on solid metal which allows the mid drivers to placed closer to the tweeters and allows for greater coherency.

According to the Daimler site the bass driver placement is in the footwells and not in the doors.
