The Apocalypse is Coming!
« on: 7 Feb 2003, 09:50 pm »
As promised, we are going to deliver a new compact sub using Adire Audio XBL Driver technology. The Apocalypse is going to be a small sealed sub that is going to challenge the best and most expensive products on the market.

Until now there has always been a trade-off between size and output. The Apocalypse is going to be a small sub that will fit in almost any living environment with ease. In addition, it is going to have output levels that surpass the most expensive (and large) subwoofers on the market. We didn't have to sacrifice musical ability for the output and size. The Apocalypse is extremely musical with excellent transient response and a total system Qts of around .69 in it's small sealed box. Music was our first priority and we were unwilling to sacrifice performance in this area for additional output. With Adire Audio's world-class engineering we were able to design a subwoofer that didn't require that sacrifice.

Some of the features:

* Small size (17.75" x 17.75" x 18.5") WxDxH 22" high with feet.
* Matte black textured finish. Easy to hide in a room corner.
* 1000W RMS High quality powered Class D amplifier
* Phase switch, line level input/output, high-level input/output, switchable boost at 25Hz
* Derivative of the Adire Audio Tumult based driver.
* Adire Audio XBL Motor Technology allows massive 34mm one-way linear excursion with EXTREMELY flat BL curve. Low power compression and exceedingly low inductance are some of the reasons we get MUCH lower measured distortion than a typical driver. Better subjective performance is related to lower distortion, lower voice coil inductance and use of a sealed box instead of ported or passive radiators that display higher group delay and slower transient response.
* Weight approx 140lbs !!!! Wow... that is a lot of subwoofer. We should have named it The Ball Buster.

Now for the best part.
The Apocalypse is going to have an introductory price of
$1359.00 complete. The Double Apocalypse is going to run $2399.00 and require a signed waiver for structural damage to your house (just kidding).

Expected availability is March 2003. We will have limited quantities to start so if your interested please email or call and get on the pre-order list.

Wow.  You are going to sell a boat load of these subs - it's the complete package - high output, tight bass, small box - high performance for the guys, able to be tucked away to please the ladies.  Nice!

I can't wait to see and hear this :D
 :?: How is it going to be done?  Doesn't seem to follow any conventional LFE physics...but neither did breaking the sound barrier in regards to velocity physics :!:

Tyson:  I hope so.  :)   I think we are going to be supply challanged for at least the first couple months.

Woodsea:   It doesn't follow the rules of physics.  We have warped time and space to bring high output, low distortion into this tiny box.  I think Dan worked with Stephen Hawking on the motor design.

Really besides the XBL motor there isn't any magic.  Oh... if you want to do some reading on XBL here is a link.

Woodsea - it's all about moving air - and a 15inch driver capable of over 30mm of excursion (one way) will move serious ammounts of air.  Deep bass CAN be done in a small box, if you have a driver capable of moving a lot of air and you can throw a lot of power at the driver.  The 1000 watt amp should take care of that nicely.  Imaging a big Velodyne on super-steroids, and you get an idea of what this sub should be capable of...

Tyson:   I think the motor is capable of about 50mm one way (don't quote me).  The suspension is the limiting factor right now.    Also, the benefits are much more than the massive amounts of excursion.  We also have a much more linear driver over that excursion.

The typical driver experiences changes in it's T/S parameters the further out of the gap the voice coil travels.  In addition the suspension gets progressively stiffer.  The motor is the primary contributor though and this non-linear beahavior is the root cause of most distortion in subwoofers.   The flat BL curve means that we keep stable T/S parameters over 85-90% of the X-Max so we get very low distortion throughout most of that travel.  The lower power compression is due to the efficiency of the driver not changing near as much as a traditional driver as you near excursion limits.  In addition, our voice coil inductance numbers are exceedingly low in comparison to what those Velys, TC Sound drivers etc...     For a little education on why this is important to subjective sound quality check out.
