So you haven't seen the two of them together?
I have nothing further to add, I rest my case. :D

Steve:

Jim Dandy is one of a kind and opened the door for David Lee Roth, Sammy Haggar and countless others. David Lee Roth is one of the best front man of all time.  If you toss out the name Jim Dandy Mangrum to the middle aged rocker, most wouldn't know of him.  This is not to say he wasn't talented...

David Lee Roth is more tube like anyway 8)

Sorry but Class D just doesn't do a washboard justice.
A zither, maybe but a washboard?  You need that tube magic.

Jim Dandy reminds me a LOT of David Lee Roth.  Has anyone ever seen the two of them together?

While I do believe a powerful tube amp would do justice to the Pan's,
I also think I'm getting some very good sound with the Bel Canto's..

I've owned a few audio systems in my time and I still like a tube pre with
solid state amp(s), it balances out nicely.

Would I like to bi-amp some planners, you bet.

What is a zither??

Sorry about the last two post above.

Here's a still from the recent DVD, Zithars Gone Wild.

We're just kidding about needing tubes to properly reproduce Jim Dandy's mastery of the washboard.

Music lives in the midrange and tubes do it best.

To me, it's harmonics and tonal textures that they get right.  I'm using a C/J clone preamp, fed from tubed DACs's, which then is fed to a Pass Labs XA 30-5.  To me, this is using each technology at it's best.  It's a great sounding combo.

Today I got to listen to some of my own albums and more via a tube Conrad Johnson power and pre with a Linn Sondek table and arm and a Koetsu Rosewood Signature driving some Avalon Transcendant speakers.  The phono pre was German but can't recall the name.  Large room, too, with a wool rug over a tile floor.  Very sweet and detailed sound with grand physical scale compared to what I'm used to.  Seemed to do everything right over and above my system.  Liked the Avalon's a lot.  Couldn't detect any irregularity or coloration in the frequency spectrum which was quite wide.  They'll do 28Hz according to a review I read afterwards.  Not something I could afford to purchase but appreciated the very fine sound.  The CJ gear seemed a little polite which is OK with me.

Agreed that tubes are awesome.  But you really, really, really need to hear a good tube amp directly driving your speakers - ie, active.  Tube amps sound their best when they are allowed to directly couple with your drivers.

How do you mean Tyson? Without a crossover or anything?

Active crossover.  I have a 3 way setup with a tube amp driving my tweeters, a 2nd tube amp driving my mids, and a Crown K2 amp driving my woofers.  Phenomenal sound.  A miniDSP 4x10 HD doing duty as a DAC, a Preamp, a crossover, and a room/driver EQ.

Very interesting, I'll read up on that gear you listed, thanks :)

Edit. What speakers are they?

Bastardized GR Research V2's.  I use the OB tweeters from the V1's in my speakers to give me full OB over the entire frequency response.  The stock V2's use only a forward facing (and inferior) tweeter.  The V1 tweeter is actually a great match to the V2s.

Cool, I have Super Vs but they are currently powered by a $50 Sonic Impact T amp!

Paid for a nice tube amp over 2 years ago but it the power supply failed straight away still hasn't been fixed. Hopefully one day.

Meanwhile I am considering selling it and buying a PrimaLuna integrated or similar, or maybe building a 300B or Mini Beast etc.

So are you not using the servo amps with the subs?

No, v2's don't use servo subs, much to my chagrin.....

Ah I see. You could always rectify that :)
