an excellent sub is the Allegro by an indipendant canadian manufacturer ISD.  it is incredably fast and musical. a small 7 1/2" isobaric driver.  which means there are two drivers sealed together inside front to back facing the same direction. the result is they move more air like a bigger driver but mover very efficiently like a smaller cone.

the website isn't much to look at but check it out  www.athomehifi.com.
give the guy a call you will not be disapointed

even if the $1300 is canadian, that's still ~$970 usd.  *each*.  for that amount of money, there's no way i'm not gonna get a pair of vmps', and an outboard active x-over & amp...

why do you need two subs? any sound the sub generates is pretty much unidirectional.  read this it makes sense:

Technical correction: an isobaric moves exactly the same amount of air as a single cone, and it is also 3dB less efficient. The advantages are a smaller box, and possibly some distortion reduction if the drivers are face to face.

I have isobaric subs :D

There are a couple advantages to using two subs.  The first is obvious- more bass energy.  You may desire more output due to listening preferences or you might have a larger room than one sub can pressurize effectively.  A second advantage is that by placing subs in different locations, sometimes you can get more even bass response by engaging different room modes.  This takes a lot of work & measurements, but sometimes yeilds flatter deep bass.

I've tried having one sub with stereo music, and I can't take it.  I can hear where the sub and also there's a reduced stereo effect.  I think the studies are bunk.

it may make sense when you *read* it, but when you *listen*, then it no longer makes any sense!

even if you cross over as low as 50hz, unless the sub is *exactly* centered between the speakers, you *will* be able to localize it.  and, w/this location, the best-case scenario will be no change in soundstaging.  if you have two subs, placed flanking your mains, the soundstaging will actually improve.

others' comments about less room interaction difficulties, & more spl/less distortion definitely apply w/two subs vs one sub.

ymmv,

woah...
call me humbled...

but i use only one sub. i do have it centered with the level low and it disappears into the soundstage with the mini-monitors. i can agree with the argument for more power.
