If it has a series crossover, does that mean you won't be able to biamp/active xo any more?

I believe my 2.5's have a series crossover, to bi-amp you will need to bypass the existing x/o.

Nah, the 2.5 has a standard (parallel) crossover.

But any speaker can be multi-amped regardless of the existing crossover.

Cheers,

Dave.

Davey:

I believe you're right, but the previous owner of my 2.5's changed things....you're right that you can still bi-amp.

The requisite connections didn't come out on the MMG anyway. Of course, you could always open it up and rewire it, as Davey points out.

Oh, I didn't realize that.

Guess I'll have to wait then.

Well, it's been a week - is there any more news on the "MMG.7"?

Just wondering  :D

You probably won't hear much until the upcoming show but I'll be doing some sort of a write up myself sooner or later.
I love my original ones, never really took a shine to the updated ones (had some and sold them off) so I'm really curious as to what the newest ones are like.

Here's one on page 3

It sounds like a complete redesign on the MMGs and it's not being demonstrated as a stand-alone.

"He did state that due to the design architecture, it was not electrically possible to bi-amp or bi-wire the speaker (just as with the rest of the current line)."

The same statement we've heard from Wendell before regarding the X.7 models.  Translation......the new MMG has a series crossover.  :)

Cheers,

Dave.

I had the impression that he was thinking primarily in terms of showing the MMG/DWM combo that he's been so taken with. He was pretty blown away by the unexpected synergy in their listening room -- the combination producing bass that was deeper than either one alone. I didn't know he was going to use a center channel, but that may have been needed to accommodate the seating arrangement at the show.

Think you're right on that. :-) But he did emphasize that this isn't just a superficial redesign.

Guys, I asked at the door of the demo room today and was told that I MIGHT be able to demo the MMGs solo at the very end of the show if I asked real nice.  I'm going to give it my best shot because I REALLY want to hear THESE speakers.  I will also shoot some probably not so great pics with my blackberry.  I'll do my best to get as much as I can without lifiting the socks off.  Wish me luck!

Tell them Steve Ford says you're the Ace Reporter from Audio Circle and you're on assignment.
Maybe they'll even give you the VIP treatment (a Ritz cracker with Cheeze-It on it, split four ways).
They are rather frugal...

Reviews starting to trickle in. Kentaja gave them an unqualified rave on the Asylum, and I just came across this:

"The new, improved MMG (still $599) from Magnepan might look like the old model but who cares?  The sound is stunning.  Possibly the biggest bargain in budget hi-fi.  On display also is the Magnepan bass panel that looks like a table! So, $1394 for the speakers and the bass panel.  If you have an amplifier that’s up to the task, you’d be hard-pushed to find better sound for the money.  Well done Wendell."

Good find, Josh!
It appears as if the people on AC skipped Magnepan and Martin Logan?

We skipped them because we have a history of being underwhelmed by both manufacturers.  Just not our cuppa joe.  So why go back if you're just gonna end up bagging on them?  Time better spent elsewhere, and leave those rooms to people that like ML's and Maggies.

I appreciate all the updates/photo's from Pez/Tyson/etc, but I find myself shaking my head when looking at the various offerings.  I'm really only interested in speakers, but the whole thing just illustrates how ridiculous and upside-down this crazy industry is.

My goodness.....a $20,000 pair of speakers (Serenity Acoustics) that requires you to convert your listening room into a creepy funeral parlor looking area?
The photo's of just about every room made me laugh.  It's just crazy.  :)

This is NOT the hobby I became interested in back in the 60's.

Cheers,

Dave.

I wanted to hear these at RMAF but I was told I needed to get on the list and come back in 20 minutes, had to pass as there was simply too much to sample and add in trying to keep track of when to return just ruled the Maggie room out for me. :(

Steve, I've got some things to say about the Magnepan room.  I did the demo there twice.  I also did the ML room, King Sound, and Sanders.  I think I managed to hit all but one of the planar rooms (I think there was one Tyson and Pez hit that I didn't get to. . . I didn't spend a lot of time in the really big rooms downstairs).

It will take me a day or two (I have to get back to work tomorrow), but your questions have motivated me enough to properly edit and post up my notes from the show.  I may not have very good pictures compared to others here (I might not even bother posting them. . . snapped them from my phone more or less as place holders for my notes), but I took Tyson's advice on cutting up a demo disc to use during the show, so the structure of my observations should be at least similar.  I will be staying away from Pez and Tyson's threads until I get this done to make sure their thoughts don't get mixed up with my own notes.

Sorry I wasn't quite as prepared as the real-time blogging machines ;), but I'll give it my best shot.
