Hello all; I'm hoping you can help me. I love my Hogan and do not want to risk any issue with it. I do have a question regarding using a matched pair of Shuagang Treasures CV181Z. Can I do this safely? I read the TNT -audio site and they did have a concern in there review. Thanks in advance!!! Jack

Should be OK:

Specsheet http://www.grantfidelity.com/site/files/shuguang%20treasure%20tube%20spec%20cv-181.pdf

They mention a "-Z" version and "-T (6SN7)" version. You might wanna email Rachel to clarify the differences. Back when I was looking into them (around 2009?) I remember there was some difference between CV181 and 6SN7 max B+ voltage. Iirc, after some failures, they changed the tube so it would work in all ^SN7 applications.

Ironically, now they warn against using the CV181-Z tube in designs calling for true CV181, but it will work in any 6SN7.

Thank you for your fast answer. I read and re-read the grantfidelity site info and the detailed specs. I bought them used with roughly 350 hours on them from someone who I felt very comfortable with. It seems that I should not worry, but I'm a bit paranoid about my amp and would hate to have anything happen. Thanks again.

I found an email I wrote to Manley asking about this tube. On 7/7/2009 I downloaded the Grant CV181 specsheet, and it was the same as it is now. Heater current .6A and max plate 450V. Same as 6SN7 ratings.

Fantastic!!! Now I can sit back and just enjoy the music!!! I listened for about 10 minutes and they sounded excellent. But, I don't think I even let the amp warm up enough.

Thanks and regards

You don't have to worry about this in your case, Jack, but others considering this tube in their preamps should know that the glass is significantly taller than the 6SN7 and may not fit into a preamp's chassis.  That is exactly my problem unfortunately.  I'd love to try these tubes.

Thanks for the additional confirmation. And you are certainly right about the size, they are significantly larger in bight and width. If you are considering them in any equipment, make sure you have the room.
