Frybaby on External Power Supply
« on: 19 Sep 2012, 02:55 pm »
Hi to anyone else who owns a Frybaby.

I just received my Frybaby which I ordered from Jim.

To operate the Frybaby on the external power supply, do you have to leave the battery in the unit to "close the circuit"?

My Frybaby works fine with the battery (i.e. the LED lights up as RED) but the moment I remove the battery and plug in the external power supply, it simply refuses to work.
Is this normal?

In addition, my LED light is not Green but is RED (on battery) and also RED (when I plug in the battery and the external power supply).

Is there any problem with my Frybaby unit?

Mine works on AC without a battery.

Perhaps the external power supply is not working? Check the wall wart, is it providing voltage?

Check your switch position. In the "off" position the LED is green.  In one of the two active positions the Led is red and flashes to match the modulation rate.

Geary

Hi Geary,

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, it looks like my Frybaby is really defective.

I used a Fluke multimeter to test the external wall wart and it displayed 12V of DC output. So I'll have to rule out the wall wart as being the cause of the defect.

With the wall wart plugged in (and without a battery), the LED refuses to light up in all positions.

Make sure that the center is hot on the wall wart.

Hi Geary,

Yes, I confirm that the center is hot.

Frankly, considering that I paid US$250 upfront, I'm a bit disappointed that this brand new Frybaby is defective out of the box.

Email Jim, he may have other testing ideas.  He will take care of the issue.

Hi Geary,

I've done that.

He is out of office until monday 24th Sept, hence my post in the forum hoping for some answers from other Frybaby owners.

I reside outside the US so if this involves any shipping to and fro for repairs, I'll be out of pocket by quite a fair bit.

For the amount of money I paid for this unit, I would have expected it to have been tested more thoroughly before it was shipped out to me.

Hi Geary,

I decided to re-check the DC polarity on the wall wart which Jim sent to me along with my Frybaby.

YES! You are right. It turns out that the tip is negative and the sides are positive.

I'll have to get another Wall wart (with the Positive tip) and test the frybaby again.

Thanks for your reminder.

Dear Jim,

If you are monitoring this, please take note.

Otherwise your other 240v AC Frybaby customers will end up with supplied Wall Warts which do not work as in my case.

Aha - my mistake.  I must have wired the wall-wart backwards...
