Oppo adding the digital inputs and removal of the fan are big and welcomed additions.  Those were my two main complaints, pencil me in for the upgrade.  :thumb:

Wonder what kind of streaming options the new Oppo players will have.  Also wonder if they can be controlled via iPhone/iPad/iTouch.  That would nearly replace the need for a music server with a TV allow a stereo to double (assuming audio was your priority) a HT system too.

It also would be nice if they had a digital input for plain old DD and DTS.  That way, a 2-channel person with rear speakers can take signal out of a video player and get surround.  It should be interesting.  I'm about 18 mos. away from a move and I may not get something immediately and may not care much for audio capabilities but I really appreciate what Oppo brings to the table.  I have a modded BDP-83 in the main system and a BDP-93 I had in secondary bedroom system for a bit and about a year ago I moved to the secondary basement system.  I had PS3 down there for Blu-Ray on a 4-yr old mid-priced 720p projectior and the Oppo was quite an improvement on video.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but does this mean the Oppo can be used as a DAC?  Would it work with a Squeezebox or does the Oppo have its own internal player that has the same function as a SBox?  Thanks!

Yep, the Oppo could be used as a DAC. A big feature in my book. Dan at Modwright at some point was considering offering this as a mod, but not sure whatever happened to that idea.

On the other hand, I saw a thread recently comparing an Oppo 95 to a Wyred4Sound DAC1, and the Wyred was preferred. So a 103 and an external DAC might be a better bet in terms of sound quality.

Thanks Roscoe, I'm concerned about spending another grand on a DAC.  If the Oppo works and I can use it as a DAC for my SBT, or use it as a wireless player, that would be great.  Ideally, if it works as a wireless streamer/stand alone player, I might just spring for one and sell my SBT and my tube modded CDP.  Might keep the CDP because it's probably not worth much on the used market.  This is interesting...

Agreed, mighty exciting in many ways. Looking forward to reviews pricing and more details on specs. An Android and iPhone interface would also be killer.

The iPhone ap works perfectly on the SBT.  The old remote is useless because my 47 year old eyes can't read the display from my listening distance.  If the Oppo players are priced similar to the ones they replace, it could be awesome - assuming they sound as good.

Yes, the all in one solution is why so many are excited about the added features of the new Oppo.
The current 95 does allow for playing files from an external source via USB or over your home Network via the My Network feature.  My Network works but is not a feature laden slick design like most modern interfaces, feels like DOS compared to Windows but it's functional and I suffer through it instead of using my SB Touch.

This Chinese website has great pictures that will show you the 95 and what the interface looks like.

could someone interpret this for me  (from the Oppo website: http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-103/)?

PAL/NTSC Conversion - The BDP-103 supports NTSC and PAL systems for both disc playback and video output. It can also convert content of one system for output in another. (Subject to DVD and BD region restrictions.)

Does this mean it will play European DVDs?  I'm thinking no because they are region restricted, right?

thanks,
jim

I have not looked at the issue in detail but I'd guess you're right.  I have an old Oppo DV980H and I found a four digit code that makes the player region free and easy to convert back too.  There was a hack for the BDP-93 to make it region free for DVDs (not Blu-Rays).

Here is the hack that worked with the BDP-83 and BDP-93 for DVDs

FWIW I bought one of the hardwired region free hacks from eBay for a BDP-93, paid about $24.  It makes it DVD region free automatically and BluRay region selectable from remote key codes - the DVD part works a treat, never tried the BluRay hack so can't comment on this.

Here's one I found at random that:

It was simpler in the old days for sure.  I remember you could make at least one brand region free by playing a Region zero disc as the first disk.  I have a few Region zero discs and one Region 3.  I was going to play the Region 3 disc that someone gave me on the computer until I say the easy fix for the Oppo DV980H with the four digital code.  I was thinking about selling the DV980H at that point (it was in a secondary basement system collecting dust and I could have gotten about what I paid for it years before)  but the ability to play all regions now makes it a keeper
