What happens to your iTunes library when you die?

Food for thought, although 99% of my library is comprised of my own rips (although I hear that's not really mine either).

Who inherits your iTunes library?.

Good question.

Everyone has a will (the state has a standard default one that applies to anyone unless you've written your own).  Typically the state will gives everything to the current spouse, if no spouse equally to all decendants, if no decendants equally to all siblings.  Having your own will can also help avoid various estate taxes.

Now, does anyone know (or can find) all your log-ins and passwords, accounts, list of family/friends?

And you have advanced care directives in place?

Finally, what about final arrangements?  (Hate to pile on, but its all important.)

It's frankly irresponsible (like me ) not to have all this end of life planning in place.  Just add it to top of your bucket list.   :green:

All good points from JLM, and serving as executor / trustee for my late mother, things I've come to realize all to well.

BUT........think everyone should actually click the link & read the article - it's an eye opener.  Something really to think about as I'm in the process of doing my own estate planning.

Sure, your heirs can just assume ownership of your equipment w/ all your digital property & do as they please, but as far as real full legal property rights to that content, that article discusses that grey area. I guess another reason to buy media in physical format & rip it to your PC.  Though storing all that indefinitely as the collection grows is a bit of a PITA.

I'm sure at that point I won't really care what happens to anything I own.

haven't read the article yet but I've thought about that.  There is no secondary market for apps and downloads.  You buy it and that's it you can't sell it.  Pretty good racket.  :P

I have two immediate thoughts:
First, how is "The Man" going to to control the assets... with Tags, imbedded code?

Second, I'm trying to figure out where my kids heads will be at in 30 years, which is impossible to predict. But the kids today just scoff at the idea of "paying" for digits.

Who knows how it will all evolve. Will they try to accommodate the citizens or will the corporate lobby complex write the laws. Well funded lobbyist seem to own the process these days, but, who knows?

Your digital assets are as good as gone.  I can barely remember my passwords now, nevermind my heirs.  I already can't play the early iTunes purchases I made on my new computer because of forgotten passwords and old e-mail accounts.

The monitor Apple installed in you when you signed the EULA sends a message to Cupertino and the Apple stormtroopers are dispatched to secure all your Apple electronics. What did you think happens?

Looks like we can take it with us. Does it come with a remote and backlit keyboard?

It occurs to me now w/ the advent of services like spotify that the idea of actually "owning" your own music "software" will seem antiquated to future generations, rendering the whole problem somewhat mute.

Too bad there isn't an "audiophile" spotify - probably because 99.6N% of people don't care.
