Suggestions for a decent interconnect under $40
« on: 7 Feb 2003, 01:11 am »
I just ordered some Grado SR-80 headphones and a DB systems DB-9 Headphone amp and I need to get some interconnects for the set-up.  I'm trying to be reasonable and keep the cost down since it's only for late night/occasional  listenning.  Also if I can keep it under $40 I can get my sister to buy them for my birthday!

A .5 Meter of Kimber PBJ would be good to have around.  You can get it used for about $30.... maybe even new for $40.. I don't know.  They have a new 'Tonik' line out that I've heard is good but, I haven't used it.  I've used the PBJ with excellent results.

The Zu Pil interconnect line. Competes with the PBJ at a fraction of the price!! Check it out.

There's an eBay seller that sells a relatively cheap IC that's similar to the Kimber PBJ braided construction. If you do a search on "CABLEPLEX", you should be able to find several of his auctions.

The product is pretty good quality and uses Mil Spec silver coated solid copper wire which is teflon coated. The RCA jacks could be a little better but for the price I paid ($18 + 3.85 shipping = $21.85 shipped), I could not complain.

I have a few pairs of these running in my system currently, aside from DH Labs Airmatrix ICs, and having Audio Magic Excalibur IIs. I can honestly say they are pretty damn competitive to these fine ICs and costs a lot less than I paid for these others.

Give it a try maybe...not much to lose.

Buy some Belden 89259 and some Eichmann Bullet-plugs.  Remove the jacket and the overall shield on the coax and only use the guts inside.  Twist the large diameter insulated wire together to make a twisted-pair.  Then tape them together to keep them from separating.  Solder the Bullet-plugs on the ends and voila!  You will find this hard to beat at $200 a meter pair.

I found out when I was in Utah that the Tonik is actually developed with some of the new research that Kimber has been doing on insulation color, and the effects of dyes, and pigments on sound.  In fact, Tonik may be better than PBJ in some ways.

thanks.  Just ordered a pair.  For that price it's worth it to check them out.

The Oxyfule is awsome!! I have a 1m pair that is not in use right now. My entire system is done up in the Zu Varials. The Oxyfule is probably IMHO one of the best interconnect out there in the $300 and down category.  :P
